We saw cross country national champion Ashley Brasovan make her reappearance to the racing scene a week ago after she had been sidelined from an injury, which had kept her out most of the year. While we all hoped she would be back into form in time for the state meet and postseason, it looked like she did have a while to go. Her times, while certainly still respectable, where not shall we say "Brasovan-esque": 5:10 and 11:27. Well, last night at the Palm Beach County Championship we saw those worries put to rest. She ran a meet record 10:33.27 in the 3200 meters, which followed a 5:06.58 1600! Nice double, Ashley, and nice to see you back!
But that wasn't all for the fireworks at Cardinal Newman School for the night. Leonardo Seymore showed that he is no joke; he wants to stake a claim against Jefferey Demps for the title of the state's fastest runner. And he has a good argument! His meet record 10.35 in the prelims, followed by a 10.39 in the finals is no joke! That 10.35 is the fastest wind-legal time in the state, even if just barely wind legal--the guage was at 2.0 exactly (the legal limit). And as if that weren't enough Seymore ran two other (wind legal) times in the 200 meters: 21.14 in the prelims and 21.19 in the finals. Those four runs in a one day meet can be described with no other word but "sick"! And although the results do not report the relay legs, the Dwyer won both the 4x100 (41.75 Prelims, 41.57 Finals) and 4x400 (3:22.05)--and I'll betcha he took a handoff in one of those as well!
Robert Clark, also of Dwyer, took home a meet record of his own with a 24-5 long jump, which puts him 2nd in the state and 5th in the nation this year. And if you take out the wind-aided or NWI (no wind instrument) performances this year, it is the #1 long jump in the country!
Other great highlights at the meet:
Stacey-Ann Smith had a nice double 11.85w/11.86w in the 100 and 25.01/23.99 in the 200. Vanessa Anthony ran a 45.07 in the 300 hurdles (FL #5). David Aristil 6th in the state with 14.41 110H. Exilien Reshaw also put himself at 6th on the Florida rankings with a time of 47.99 for the 400m. Dueling shot puts from Vincent Mercurio and Macrus Hicks, saw Hicks come up on top 54-9 to 54-3. And in the girls 800 it must have been a fun race to watch: Stephanie Schappert following in her big sister Nicole's foosteps with a 2:17.72 win, Jillian Collins 2:17.99 and Kesia Derilus 2:18.43 close behind.
