3A REGION 1
Perenial titans Pensacola Washington are going to be facing an uphill battle this year against upstart Leon. Remember last year, Leon came out of "no where" to upset the entire classification sweeping both team and individual titles. Leon barely got mentioned last year in preseason previews and Matt Mizereck was on no one's radar for individual champ honors. But come the end of the season it was Mizereck edging in front of a stumbling Eric Larsen.
This year Leon and Mizereck will be surprising no one! They have perhaps tthe best 1-2 punch in the state: Mizereck (junior) and Will Stanford (sophomore). If they can get a little help at 4 and 5 they could possibly contend to be the best overall in the state. One injury though could dash their title hopes.
However, Washington is no slouch. They have a very solid team lead by Peter Fricke who will be filling the very large shoes graduated Eric Larsen left for him. But it will be tough to answer Leon's 1-2 knockout.
Ft. Walton Beach could have an outside shot to contend for second in the region if they can get someone to step up into the number five slot and Leon or Washington slip up. Donald Davis gives Pine Forest strength up front, but their 3-5 is likely to keep them out of the top three. No one else is likely to contend and we see Navaree outside of the top five in the region for the first time in a while--they've got no more Boykins left. Zak Boston is their 1-man this year and he will mix it up with the top five in the region.

3A REGION 2
A lack of depth plagues this region. And it will be team who worked hardest over the summer who I think is going to come out ahead in the end. Not that that isn't almost always the case, but I think it will be especially important here where there is no room for error and just a bunch of "middle of the pack" runners who will be battling it out for every position.
George Jenkins starts out as the top ranked team in this region. They've got a solid top five but lacks that ace that Plant, Newsome, and Chamberlain have. It might not be a big deal in small meets, but at the state meet it will certainly have a big impact. It could even come to play at the regional meet where an extra five points can really hurt.
My pick here would be Plant. "The myth the man the legend" Coach Mike Boza has a year under his belt now since taking over at Plant High in May of last year. With that, I think he will have been able to get those kids to buy into his program and I'm sure has them working like soliders this summer. He's just cool like that. So on paper they have a solid top five (with a decent ace in Trenor Wilkins), but nothin to jump up and down about and no depth after that. I think we'll see quite a bit more spark beyond that and I bet we'll see at least a 6-man emerge. Write it down!
Newsome is the up and comer... impressive the last few years on the boys and girls side. It's so great to see new building programs come about out of nothing! They could mix it up if either of the top two falter. As could Chamberlain if one of a few guys step up in the fifth position for them--Mark Parrish up front means they're only scoring four runners, which helps!

3A REGION 3
Sorry, but it ain't lookin' too pretty on the team front right now. Although we don't see them on the list of top five returning teams, I believe Seminole will be the number one team in this region. They've certainly got the best top three, who are likely to see the finish line before most of team's number one in this region: Casey Crawford, Chris MicWilliams, and Kevin Siessel.
The problem is it gets murky after that. Seminole doesn't travel much out of county to big meets and Pinellas County is a black hole for results. So it's often hard to get a good idea of what's going on. We know they have a fourth man around 18:28 (just a freshman last year), but no record of a fifth. I think they develop the talent to again be this region's leader.
Ida Baker has a solid team and a good distance tradition and are likely to hold on to the #2 position at regionals or who knows maybe even upset Seminole. Of the rest, we'll see what happens... graduation just really hit a lot of team's hard in this region.
*Update* Coach Calhoun reports that they've had a max exodus. Of the amazing top four Seminole returned, only one runner (Kevin Siessel) is going to be running this year. So looks like a rebuilding year for sure.

3A REGION 4
This is going to be a slugfest between Satellite and Okeechobee. Satellite has the slight edge (check out this insane virtual dual meet!). It's like the strong tradition of Satellite versus the upstart Okeechobee squad. Coach Nathan Owen has been doing a fantastic job building that program, and they are starting them young with a great feeder program at Yearling Middle. So watch out for Chobee! They read lead by the region's top individual, Eddie Guerrero.
Satellite has a nice three pack in James Stern (yes, another Stern), Steve Schiff, and Kevin Hall. This region is not that strong individually, so unfortunately for Okeechobee Guerrero doesn't give them that much of a boost. Where this one is going to be won and lost is in four and five.
It's really unlikely we're going to see anyone else to compete for a top two slot in Region 4. But you never can count out St. Thomas Aquinas. Boca Raton's got a decent group to build on.
