Standing 6 feet tall at the starting line Karimah Davis is not your typical sprinter, but don't tease her about her height.
"Even though she's 6-feet-tall she hates it, if you ever want to get an argument with her tell her she's 6 foot." jokes long time coach Derek Walker.
Davis' height isn't the only thing setting her apart from the crowd. The Palm Beach Central Senior has slowly made her way to the top of the pack despite only beginning her track career as a freshman year.
"The first time she ever ran a 400 she ran the first 200 like she was running in the Olympics. About 20 meters from the finish line she was almost at a walk. After sitting down for about 30 minutes she said Coach Walker I'll never run a 400 again."
Clearly, a lot has changed. Last year the then Junior snatched the 4A state title in the 400 with a time of 54.05 and a 4th place finish in the 200 (24.94).
"I've learned to execute and breakdown the race and fight to the finish. The 400m all has to do h your mind but with God, my coach, and my determination to be the best I've learned to run a race to the best of my ability using those vital tools" states Davis.
The standout gained notice from schools across the country, but ultimately choose ACC powerhouse Florida State University.
"I'm beyond excited words can't even express the excitement running through my body I'm honestly looking forward to being around the team in becoming a part of a New program and seeing what I can gain from it"
Davis states that the combination of the campus, closeness to home, and connection with the team sealed her decision to join the Seminoles.
With her college decision settled, Davis looks to end her senior season with a bang.
"My goals for this year is to be a state champion again but this time I'm shooting to conquer both the 200 and the 400."
Karimah will kick off her senior campaign December 30th while competing for Fast Lane Track Club in Alabama and hitting the indoor circuit.
