1A Preview: Can Grace Blair Get Oak Hall Back On Podium?

Boys Preview

Boy's Individuals:

Now focusing on the boys 1A state race, Chase Hyland, a senior from The Pine School is looking like the clear choice on which runner might win. Last year, Hyland finished fourth at the state, and is the top returner. He's boasts the fastest time of any 1A runner at regionals with a time of 16:15.60 from 1A-3.

Hyland has been on a bit of a hot streak, winning his last three races and now has the chance to end his last season of cross in high school with a first place finish at states. He also plans on announcing his college choice in the coming days and told flrunners.com that it would be sweet to add the words "state champion" when talking about his commitment. However, he isn't out of the woods safely yet because they're several runners that might give him a run for his money.

Josh Skielnik, from Jupiter Christian has run the fastest time this year out of the top four guys going into states. He came in second at the Spanish River invite with a time of 16:05.10 and has also run a 16:12 early in the season. Skielnik has the ability to perform well when up against good competition. With several runners close to him up front, we could see him try to make a move early on.

Others in the mix include Ryan Szklany of Higlands Christian and Mt. Dora Christian Academy's Gabriel Curtis. Szklany has a season best of 16:24.38 as well as another race in the 16:20s. Curtis, is ranked second coming out of regionals. With that said honestly one of these guys could win because when race day comes nothing is guaranteed.

Boy's Team:

Looking at the boy's team performances, a few teams stand out to make a run for the state title. Maclay (pictured above) is the team to really look out for at the 1A state race. They've had a season best team advantage of 17:17, the fastest for 1A, and looks to bring home they're first team title in over ten years.

Mount Dora Christian Academy who had the best regional score of 142 and a team average of 17:28.74. They had their top three guys finish in the top top 15 at regionals and their top runner Gabriel Curtis is ranked second behind Chase Hyland. Looking to contest with the Bulldogs is Westminster Academy whose team most likely will produce a great team average. For the regional rankings Westminster came in second, but their season best team average has been 17:26 which is the second best this year.
