Everyone loves a little postseason workout as well as a chance to have some fun. That's why the Broward Elite Track Club hosted the Hoka One One Postal which featured a 1,600m and 3,200m race to go with a milk and cookie mile.
Florida sees its fair share of freshmen talent every year and 2016 is no different. In the 3A girls race two of the state's best will be on display in Lincoln's Alyson Churchill and Mater Academy's Valerie Lastra. On the boy's side it will be yet another duel between UF commitment Matthew Clark of Creekside and Michael Phillips of Chiles. Add in Joshua Collins of Belen Jesuit and this race will be fast with major team implications on the line. Belen Jesuit has been missing from the podium the last two years and Collins can change that. The girls team battle is one-sided with Niceville, the best regardless of class, leading the way. We preview all the action of class 3A.
Grace Blair of Oak Hall was third at last year's Cross Country Finals and the Eagles finished 4th. It marked the first time in a long time that Coach McTureous' program failed to make the podium. Pine Crest freshman Tsion Yared picked up her second win of the season in a new SB time of 18:18.11 at the Pine Crest Cross Country Invitational, a meet she's either won or been runner-up in the past FOUR years. On the boy's side Belen Jesuit junior Joshua Collins was once again on fire. Collins ran arguably his best race of the year at the UF Mt. The 34th annual Spanish River Invitational was back again this year and with a huge field of runners. There were 80 teams that showed up bright and early to compete this past Saturday morning. With a few times under 16 minutes for boys, several talented freshmen girls running the top times, and a defending state champion team winning their race, it was definitely a great cross country day.
Freshman Rylee Pustilnik of host Spanish River will go head to head with fellow class of 2020 standout Valerie Lastra of Mater Academy in the girls 3A/4A race at the 34th Annual Spanish River Invitational. The meet will be divided into four varsity according to classification and two JV all classification races with awards at the conclusion of the event. Varela, broke the King Of The Hill meet record set last year by Brittney Gill of Dillard in a FL#3 time of 18:29.16, while Collins won the same meet, to pick up his 4th win in five meets. Someone will be crowned the king and the queen at Friday's King of The Hill race down in Miami. The race will be at Tropical Park starting with the girl's JV race at 3:45 p.m. and finishing up around 6:15 p.m. with awards for the top runners/teams. If the weather holds up, over 50 teams will be competing. If you're looking to watch some fast runners, several of south Florida's top performers from last week will be at this meet.

Besides some heavy showers, the Park Vista Cobra Country XC Invitational was a great success. The invite was held at South County Regional Park which is where the traditional 5k Spanish River course is held. The race for people who don't know is a two loop course with a hill at the end and a nice straight finish.
While the northern part of Florida was unfortunately being hit with hurricane Hermine, south Florida was in the clear and remained the sunshine state. Thankfully the weather was sunny and made the Miami Dade County Fair HS championship a success. Over 50 schools arrived Thursday afternoon at the Larry & Penny Thompson Park ready to compete even though it was a hot day. Besides the heat, the meet had some great season openers, rewards for the top finishers/top teams, and even a famous NBA basketball player in attendance.
The time has come for the traditional Miami-Dade County Youth Fair HS Championship and this year the race is stacked. The meet has 48 high schools registered, all ready to compete against some of south Florida's best. Consisting of four races, the first one to start will be the girl's JV at 3:30 p.m. Check out our virtual meet feature to get a heads up on who to watch out for on race day. Over the past three years, Alexandra Del Re has been making a name for herself on the track. Del Re, who goes by Ali, had a stellar performance at both the middle school state meet and the USATF Junior Olympics. Not only did she win her 3000 meter race at the state meet, but she also broke the middle school state record running 10:04.16. This fall she makes her cross country debut as a freshman at Jupiter High School. Del Re is expected to not only make noise in Palm Beach County, but in a loaded class 4A. We caught up with Ali to talk about how she started in the sport, her summer training, goals for 2016, and much more.
Nothing but sunshine and fast times at this year's Fleet Feet Invitational presented by Saucony. Saturday morning teams from all over the southeast of Florida showed up bright and early to race at South Fork high school. With 39 teams and a few unattached runners, the trip to this invite was worth the drive.
What was suppose to be a night to remember under the lights was sadly cancelled due to heavy thunder storms. Only four races were able to finish at the Martin County Under The Lights Invitational before heavy downpours came rolling in. Even though the meet didn't go as planned, we were able to see some great performances from both the middle school and JV races.
Seven area schools kicked off the 2016 season at the Benjamin School in West Palm Beach. Teams started off on the football field, circling baseball fields, and finally finishing on the track. Suncoast senior Annie Allmark picked up her first win of the season as did Jupiter Christian's Josh Skielnik who was in his second race of the year.
