Samantha Folio has been a fixture of 1A power Holy Trinity since she was 43rd as a 7th grader in 2011. The next four years she finished in the top 25, and ended her senior cross country season as the state runner-up. Recently, the Tigers standout announced she will continue her athletic and academic journey at Georgia Tech. We caught up with her to talk about the decision, her time at Holy Trinity, the upcoming track season, and much more.
What was the recruiting process like for you?
The recruiting process for me was both exciting and stressful. The entire process is exciting with regards to meeting your potential coaches and teammates, but it is also stressful to think about your future. I am happy that I was able to take part in the process, and I am excited for what is to come.
Where all did you visit consider?
Besides Georgia Tech, I also officially visited The United States Military Academy at West Point and the University of Central Florida. Additionally, I considered Florida State, Embry Riddle, University of Miami, University of Georgia, West Virginia University, and University of Virginia.
What in end sold you on Georgia Tech?
Ever since I was little, I knew that I wanted to be an engineer. I visited the Georgia Tech campus last winter and I made it one of my priority academic programs to consider. After my official visit to Georgia Tech and meeting Coach Drosky and Coach Megesi, the team and the staff, I knew Georgia Tech was where I wanted to be.
I know Hana Herndon from WP is also going there. Have you had a chance to talk to her at all about it? I know former Chiles star Avery Bartlett is a freshman there as well.
I had the opportunity to talk with Hana when we were on the East team for FACA in November. We have talked several times since. I enjoy talking with her and I am happy that we will be on the same team again next year! Even though I have not had the opportunity to speak with fellow Floridian Avery Bartlett, I am looking forward to meeting him soon.
You've been running for what seems like forever starting at Holy Trinity as a 7th grader. What will you remember most bout your time there and what did that program mean to you?
I started running as a seventh grader and I have enough memories that could last me a lifetime. I will remember that my team has been a second family to me throughout my running journey. The program has meant a great deal to me and I know that even though I won't be with them next year, I will always be a part of the HT team.
You still have one more season on the track. Last year you were 5th in the 1,600 and 3,200m. What are the goals for 2017?
My goal for this season is the continue to improve my 1,600 and 3,200 performances. I had a successful Track and Cross Country season in 2016, with taking down numerous PR's, and I am looking forward to my final high school track season.
Lastly, who would you like to thank for getting you to this point in your journey?
I would like to start by thanking my family and friends. They have supported me and encouraged me throughout my running career. I would also like to thank Coach Baker, Coach Bailey and Coach Butler who have encouraged and trained me over the last 6 years.
As for the future, only time will tell but I am looking forward to competing at the collegiate level.
