Two of Florida's fastest girl quarter-milers were in attendance this weekend at the Hoover Alumni Invitational in Alabama.
Danielle Bess, a freshman at Plantation American Heritage, won the 2A 400m dash in 2015. She failed to advance out of the prelims in 2016, but proved she was back to that winning form by clocking the fastest time of any age group in the 400 with a mark of 57.33s, a new meet record, and the third fastest in the country for 2016. Coach Greg Barnes says watch and see her times will continue to drop.
"She will be 54 low maybe 53 high (by the end of the season). I tell her what you put into it is what you are going to get out of it."
Palm Beach Central senior Karimah Davis took home the 4A 400m crown in 2016. Davis won her race by over four seconds after competing in the 60m dash and said afterward it was the quarter mile that she was really looking forward to.
Even though she is committed to FSU, she is still determined to go hard in all of her races including several more indoors before the start of the Florida season.
Fast Lane Track Club coach Derek Walker says it was a pretty good opener for Davis.
"She's really been putting the work in. We're hoping to run faster next week at LSU The goal for this year is to become an All-American in the 400 and win back to back state titles so she's really looking forward to her last season of high school track."
