Week 9 - State Championship Rankings *Update 1A & 3A Boys*

It's State Championship week and only 24 teams remain in each of the four classifications. The battle for the fastest teams in Florida will be decided on Saturday at the Little Everglades Ranch. Let's see what our FACA Pollsters think as they breakdown each race.

(I decided against all of the Virtual Meets because of heavy skews based off season PRs. Although if someone would like for me to do them I can. -Coach Raposo)

1A Girls
By Jose Fernandez, Jose_Fernandez@scps.k12.fl.us

Congratulations to all the teams & individuals who qualified for the big dance. Like technology, in a few days these rankings will be obsolete and replaced by stellar results. The best in which 1A has to offer will finally compete on the same course, on the same day with the same weather conditions. No adjustments or comparisons will need to be made as on Nov. 22nd “there is no tomorrow” will be an attitude adopted by all to close out the 2008 cross country season. Here is the final…”motivational”…cross country rankings of the 2008 Florida cross country season.

Team Rankings:

1) Community SchoolThe domination will continue as the race on this day may seem like just a formality. Clear off a shelf for the 2008 championship trophy as the top girls’ team in the state of Florida is about to toe the starting line.

2) Holy Trinity – This team seems to be a lock for the runner-up position. They have continued to improve throughout the season and have maintained their ranking in doing so. Coach Butler continues his rich tradition of producing quality teams

3) Lakeland Christian – The battle for third will be a close one as four teams will probably be separated by less than 20 points. Lakeland Christian has slipped a little and is slightly holding on to this spot. Hopefully, a well rested team can convert potential to kinetic on Saturday morning

4) P.K. Yonge – Even though they won their region, this team seems to have slipped a tad up front. To remain in the hunt for that 3rd place spot, they will have to produce better efforts at the State meet. If they open the door for another team, then…

5) Northside Christian – This team has improved greatly throughout the season and is knocking on PK Yonge’s door. If opened, they will surely rush in. This team is peaking at the right time and will have one last opportune moment to place an exclamation point at the end of their great season. This team has a great shot at 3rd if the previous two teams aren’t kicking on all cylinders.

6) Maclay – Each member of this team has improved. Their #5 has closed the gap amongst all the top 10 team’s #5. This fact combined with Stolting and their #’s 2 & 3 closing the gap on P.K. Yonge’s top 2 makes them a serious contender for that 3rd place spot.

7) The Geneva SchoolThis team also has shown great improvements from their # 1 through their #7. Although these improvements have been at different races, they have demonstrated great team strength. If the members of this team can all improve on the same day, they could also be in the hunt and very close to the pack up front.

8) Keswick Christian – This team placed fourth in a tough region. A solid squad with no front runner will rely on how their packing in the middle and how soon their #5 can finish. Is their #5 better than the #5’s of the teams ranked behind them? Stay tuned…

9) Trinity Prep – This team has two front runners and two large gaps between #2 & #3 and between #3 & #4. Their ability to minimize those gaps will dictate how well they can finish as a team. Go Saints!

10) Oak Hall – One of the most improved teams in 1A from the beginning of the season has cracked into the top 10. A well deserved/earned ranking. This team will be battling Keswick, Trinity Prep, and Shorecrest Prep for the 8th place spot. This pack of four teams will produce a close team race.

11) St. John’s Country Day – This team performed well within their region. With one front runner and a solid #2, this team seems to have great potential to do better than their current ranking. Their #5 was close to breaking 22:00 at the Miccosukee course showing great improvement at the right time.

12) Shorecrest Prep – This team has the best 1-5 split of any team in 1A team. No front runners leaves this strong pack close to, but out of the top 10. This team has been performing consistently throughout the entire season. Consistency is a stepping stone to a great peak performance.

13) Westminster AcademyThis team won their district and region on a brutal course. How well they recover from their home course is key to a great performance on Saturday. They will battle First Academy and Rocky Bayou Christian for the better team position.

14) Rocky Bayou Christian – Their one front runner keeps them in the top 15. Their #4 & #5 are close together and if they break 22:00 (a serious challenge) on the state course, then this team can catapult into the top 10.

15) The First Academy – Taking fourth in their region on a tough course, this young team has also slowly improved throughout the season. Hopefully on Saturday, they can continue to grow and cap off a good season with a top 15 finish.

16) Miami Country Day – This team was only 12 points behind Westminster Academy in their region followed closely by Florida Christian. Their top 2 finished well ahead of WA #1, but WA placed their #6 in front of their #3. With a larger field, how will those places be affected?

2008 State Preview:

The stage is set for states so let’s discuss which teams could finish in the top 10 at states.

Chiles is a favorite for the team title this year as they are talented, deep, have a long history of challenging for the team title year end and out and peaking at the right time.

Satellite last year’s state champion with the sisters of Stern and Shriver appear to have run into injuries this year and are now the most likely candidate to be this year’s favorite to team to finish runner.

Wharton is one of this year’s most surprising teams as they reloaded after losing the twin Skinner sisters from last year’s squad and bring a very young and talented team to states.

Ft Walton Beach runs in competitive region 1 which makes it difficult to gauge how well they are running when compared to Chiles. This team has been very competitive with consistent performances all year.

Ft Myers returns a talented squad after last year’s top 5 finish. They have run on some slow courses in SW Fl.

Newsome is another team that has run on some slow courses in west Fl. Newsome was the last year’s highest ranked state team that returned all of its starters.

Lake Region has surprised as late as they knocked off Newsome at districts which caused some reshuffling at the top of the rankings.

Plant is a proven program that produces top results year in and out and this year is no exception and proves that good coaching works.

Leon was a team that ranked as one of my top 3 teams at the beginning of the season and now appears to making a good progress and a run for a high finish at states here at the end of the season.

Ridgeview another team stuck in that tough region 1 that is hard to evaluate because of the depth of talent in that area and is running well.

St Thomas is a young and talented squad from the east coast. They have won everything in sight as far as girls 3 A cross country is concerned in the south east coast of Fl. Finished close to Satellite in region 4.

Vanguard led by Tori Larson last year’s individual runner up which always makes any team a threat to finish in the top 10.

Individual Rankings:

Two questions will be answered this weekend. Can senior Juliana Stern of Satellite hold off freshman Lily Williams of Chiles for individual honors? Will Chiles manage to get their top 5 to finish in the top 10 at states after their impressive sweep of Region 1? Other individuals to watch out for are last year’s runner up Tory Lawson of Vanguard along with region champs Sydney Devore of Lake Region and Katie Russo of Ft Myers. On a side note there are missing some individuals and teams from region 3 that turned out to be a very hot race unfortunately for those teams and I am sure that they will be missed at states.

4A Girls
By Coach Ryan Raposo, John A. Ferguson HS, rraposo@dadeschools.net
https://fl.milesplit.com/members/CoachRaposo

Team Rankings:

(Rank. (Previous Rank) Team, Region- Commentary)
1. (1) Winter Park, 1- How can I still have the Park ranked first after a Regional loss? Plain and simple, they’ve been the team to beat and it took an extremely bad day by two of their top runners for this to occur. Keep in mind that not only does the Park have their traditional strong pack, but their 6th inside Bartram’s 5th.
Why they could win – After being beaten they’ll rise to a good challenge and shine.
Why they might not win – A real sick #1 can’t be replaced; or some other team puts together one heck of a race; or their Region meet was the beginning of the end.

2. (3) Bartram Trail, 1- Coming off a HUGE Regional win, Coach Frank’s girls are ready for a repeat of gold! They appear to be focused and those top 3 like I’ve said all year are some major contenders. The issue here is that WP (on a good day) can really match that 3 punch, and BT would definitely lose on the 4-5 follow up.
Why they could win – They’re peaking at the right time and WP has had some bad luck.
Why they might not win – In a tight race for a championship, it could come down to a battle of a single point and WP’s stronger pack makes BT the underdog in this case.

3. (2) Our Lady of Lourdes, 4- Lourdes has tried their best all season to make their case for their 1-2-3 punch but none of their top 5 have seen a PR since Flrunners. Also, their 4-5 have fallen way off from where they need to be. The once mighty Lourdes is losing the pack game more than BT and so in 3rd place they sit.
Why they could win – Running in a bad Region should allow them to train through all of their State Series meets to peak at the right time. They do have the talent.
Why they might not win – They have not performed well at the Ranch nor do I feel they like the course. The drop of the 4th and 5th runners is of major concern.
--------------------
4. (8) Melbourne, 2- I have the little line separating the top 3 teams, but Melbourne is coming off a slow region and is looking to try and gap itself from this 2nd tier and trying to catch the big dogs. Keep an eye out!
5. (4) Lyman, 1- Running as one of the best teams the past 2-3 weeks, they still have to prove themselves at the championship. Top 5 is easily in grasp.
6. (9) Vero Beach, 2- Vero Beach has been running pretty awesome but their biggest problem is a weak 5th runner that could keep them out of the top five teams.
7. (5) Spruce Creek, 1- They have a strong team and a top five finish is well within their range, but their 3-4 need to move up alongside the teams just above.
--------------------
8. (NR) Niceville, 1- Coming on strong at the end when it counts, Niceville should come home with a nice top ten. Their biggest issue is just a giant spread.
9. (6) Dr. Phillips, 1- Another strong top 10 teams, Phillips has a decent pack, but the lack of a contending 2-3 when compared to the top state level teams.
--------------------
10. (10) Cypress Bay, 3- My #10 team all year finds themselves ranked here one more time as the first 9 teams are super solid and no else can seem to catch them.
--------------------
11. (16) Palm Harbor University, 2- A great run at the Region, 11th appears to be the spot up for grabs. The top ten appear to be pretty much locked.
12. (12) Ferguson, 4- The “I told you so” team of the year. They keep getting stronger; I can’t wait until track season and CC next year. =)
--------------------
Anything goes in this bracket. A total toss up for final placing.
13. (NR) Osceola Kissimmee, 2
14. (13) Sarasota Riverview, 2
15. (15) Coral Springs, 3
16. (14) Wellington, 3
--------------------
This bracket is the same, 5 points separates these schools in a mock meet.
17. (11) Spanish River, 3
18. (22) Gaither, 2.
19. (17) South Dade, 4
20. (24) Southridge, 4
--------------------
The 500 point crew. The race for not last place is on once again!
21. (18) Douglas, 3
22. (NR) Jupiter, 3
23. (19) Sunset, 4
24. (23) Killian, 4

Comments: The reason why some people have been shuffled time wise is that I feel that Region 2 was about 20 seconds slow, Region 3 was about 15 seconds slow, and certain runners from Region 4 did not run up to their capabilities by about 5-20 seconds depending on the athlete and how they raced at the Region.

Okay, well I’m not a big 3A guy, but here’s the best I could put together over the past hour or so. Obviously Region 1 completely dominates the rest of the state but it seems as if some of the overall times from the other regions are a bit slower. I don’t know the courses other than the Greenway (which is pretty quick), but I’d assume Region 2 and 3 are slower than the rest. Otherwise, the Region 3 Champion is going in ranked 37th.
The information (team and individual rankings) below is the comparison of the results from the 4 Regions when all plugged in together. Although I think it would be foolish to bet against Leon as the team champions and as the 1-2 overall individual finishers. The race for 2-4 and 4-6 teams should be a toss-up depending on who shows up to compete!

4A Boys

Team Rankings:

1. Melbourne- This team is yet to be dethroned on the State Course, by any 4a School. They are going into the state course with the mentality of returning state champions and a chance to repeat. I must put them here. Next Saturday do not be surprised if Melbourne comes out victorious. Ignore those regional times; this team is the real deal.

2. Dr. Phillips- They have come on quite steady this year, and they have posted up the fastest team average for Regional’s. Will this team win, on November 22? Could they snatch Melbourne’s chances to repeat as champions? They have a solid 1-5 split of :43 second, this spread might win them a state title.

3. Ferguson- I just wanted to say “I told you so,” over a month ago I said this was an upcoming team that was going to be lurking if anyone made a mistake. Watch the Falcons try to snap that runner up spot next Saturday.

4. Columbus- Oh how the might have fallen!!! This team has been Ranked #1 and #2 all season, What is going on? Only time will tell!!! :) Can Columbus bounce back and win the state title? It has happened in recent history so I wouldn’t count them out just yet.

5. Bartram Trail- A solid 1-2 punch lifts their chances quite high at the State Meet, but unfortunately with a 17:40 number 5, It seems they are out of the Hunt for the title. Look for the Trail to end up here!!!

6. Winter Park – The Park always saves their best race for last, I see them even being able to land in that 4th place spot at the state meet. They need big things from Alte

7. Lyman- They are back!!! In the beginning of the year I saw this team run very well, and I’m just glad they made it back into the top 10. Watch Sean Rynning to have a great race at States

8. Niceville – This team is running extremely well, watch for this team to give a big top 6 surprise at the state course. Christian Ritacco will probably have a top 5 finish at states.

9. Boone- This team has been under the radar all season they have a fairly good front pack but a weak number 5 puts you here.

10. Sarasota- This team can probably place a bit higher but with a 17:15 team average at regionals places them here.
