Scouting Report: Estero Boys

The Estero boys stood their ground at their DDD Sommer Invitational this past weekend. The Wildcats edged out Immokalee 122-125 placing three runners in the top 25. Coach Ben Pignatone gives us the Scouting Report on this year's team.

How did your team fare last season and what did you take away from 2016?

As a team we finished up the season as district and regional champions. Going into the state meet we placed 7th with one of our guys in the top ten.

How is the team looking this year?

Depending on what day of the week you are looking at them. Varsity is always changing. We have a nice returning class and a large younger group than we ever have had before. I am excited to see their hard work come to fruition.

What are the strengths of this team?

We have a great group of dedicated young men that work well together. I couldn't be prouder of their hard work they put in over the summer. Consistency and culture will be our major strengths.

Speaking of summer, how did the training go?

Training has been tough and relentless. Building mileage and working on our weaknesses has been an eye opener for the guys. This year we did our own camp in Tallahassee. It was a great experience for the group.

Do you have any new additions who may contribute or any surprise non-returners?

We have a large freshman class that were bold enough that toughed it out over the summer and 4:45a.m practices. Out of the eight freshman I foresee a couple challenging the older guys for a spot.

What are the team goals and meets you're keying for this year?

We opened up with the Jim Ryun Invitational to see the course before FLRunners. We just had our home invitational which was the biggest it has ever been with 50 teams. FSU is another big meet we are looking forward to competing in. Our focus is progress, consistency, and unity. Looking to compete with the best teams in the state and improve from last year.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

I am very fortunate to have a great support system. One important person that is there for me and the team, day in and day out is Brian Olitsky aka "Ultra Man". He does a ton of the behind the scenes things for me and I am very grateful for everything he does. Let's put it this way, he makes me look good.
