Boomer Sooner: Citrus Park Christian's Foley Finds Oklahoma Perfect Fit

Citrus Park Christian senior Trevor Foley recently announced his commitment to the University of Oklahoma. Foley, who is ranked first in class 1A and second overall in Florida behind only Michael Phillips of Chiles, has a personal best of 15:20.00 for 5k. A week later he ran 15:21.10 to finish second behind nationally ranked Dustin Horter at the Trinity Valkyrie Invitational and followed that up by beating the North Port Invitational meet record set by former Foot Locker National finalist Tyler Bennet, and then cruising to a sub 16 victory at the FLRunners.com Race of Champions on a difficult Holloway Park Course.

He also considered Syracuse, Michigan, Furman, and Adams State and called the recruiting process very cool and interesting.

"It was definitely something I wasn't used to, but I really enjoyed it," he said. "What sold me on Oklahoma was Coach Kevin (Ondrasek) himself. He's run professionally so he knows what it takes. I also really liked the guys on the team."

Foley will join a Sooner roster that is loaded with athletes from Oklahoma and nearby Texas. The distance standout is slated to be the only Floridian as of now. Former Winter Haven sprinter Bennie Wesley is currently a senior on the team. Coach Ray Friedman describes the past year as a crazy ride with Trevor and the fact that he's not your average runner.

"He's always looking for the next big workout or race and he's always hungry; committed to the daily grind," he noted. "OU is going to be a perfect venue for him and I know that he's going to accomplish some really big things as a Sooner! He has a lot to be proud of."

When it comes to workouts, Friedman says Foley is in a class of his own as well. A 4:16 miler in high school himself, Coach doesn't think he could do any of the workouts his star pupil is doing today.

"I've never had an athlete that could endure so much pain. His pain threshold is really mind bending," Friedman added. "Assuming he stays healthy, I'm certain that we're going to see some seriously amazing times on the track."

Foley's dropped times of 4:15.69 for 1,600m and is the defending state champion in that event. He's also run 9:23.99 for 3,200m, but before he sees the oval he has business to handle on the cross country course. Last year, his near perfect season (seven wins in ten races, ten top ten finishes) came to a disappointing end after he finished 28th at the 2A Cross Country Finals, competing for Hernando High School in 2016. He's the favorite by over 40 seconds to win his first state title in cross country and his squad is in a great position to battle it out with Mt. Dora Christian Academy and others for a team title.
