The FTI Flagler Pinnacle Classic gave athletes the unique opportunity to compete in events like the 300, 600, and 1,200m run. Cocoa's Jatana Folston took full advantage. The junior who has run everything from the 100 to the 800 with personal bests that range from 12.73 in the 100m, 24.99 in the 200m, 55.06 in the quarter, and 2:11.81, a good time in the 600 was beckoning.
Folston, who comes from a family of speedsters, dashed out of the blocks, around the curve, and separated herself from the field, the only real competition, the clock. She crossed the line in a new state record time, US#1 mark, and US#2 all-time at 1:32.04.
"Our main focus was on the outdoor 600 meter NATIONAL RECORD (1:31.91) held by Carolyn Wilson," Folston said. "She now competes for Stanford University. Overall, I think the race went smooth and I finished the race strong without showing any signs of duress. I truly believe if I had competition I would have easily ran up to two seconds faster."
Ashley Klingenberg of Lake Brantley was five seconds behind her in 1:37.11. The previous record was set by current University of Miami freshman and Southridge alumni Kayla Johnson who ran 1:35.01 at last year's Hallandale All-Comers Meet.
Last year, we saw Folston do the 400 and 800 double, so it will be exciting to see what events she competes in in 2018 on a very talented Cocoa Tigers squad.
"My goals for the rest of the year are to continue progressing in every race I participate in; by doing so I will create a national buzz, which in return will help my recruiting process."
