Girls Athlete of the Week: Districts Week One

It's the most wonderful time of the year for track athletes and fans...Districts are here! And as we are halfway through districts, we take a look at the best performance of the week. Make sure to vote for your favorite girl athlete and then check back later in the week to see who wins!

Elayna Bahr- It was a good district meet for the sophomore from Winter Springs HS, as Bahr ran a 4 second personal best in the 800 to win and set the top time of the weekend with a 2:13.90. Elayna won the 4A District 2 meet as she edged Ashley Klingenberg (2:17.67).

Danielle Bess- The sophomore from Plantation American HS (pictured on the cover) took home the top honors for the week in Florida as she won the 400 meter dash in a time of 54.53. Bess's time moves her up to #4 in Florida in the 400m and she was followed by freshman teammate Kenya Thompson who finished in a  time of 54.69. Look out for these two as they continue to climb the leaderboards together.

Sydney Blackburn- To no surprise it was the sophomore from Highlands Christian Academy who led the state in the discus throw as she won the 1A District 13 with a throw of 151-7. Blackburn is the clear cut favorite to win the discus in 1A in a few weeks at UNF at the State Meet.

Holly Cassels- A new name makes the list as the sophomore from Dwyer HS took the week's best high jump mark of 5-5.75. Cassels won the 3A District 14 meet and on her way of doing that set the #10 FL mark in the high jump.

Rebecca Clark- The junior from the Villages HS put on a show in the distance events, as she won the 800, 1600, and 3200 at the 2A District 6 meet. Clark set the week's fastest time in the 3200 in Florida with a 10:41.46, as Clark's 30 points lead the Villages HS to a district title.

Tamari Davis- The freshman phenom from Gainesville HS swept the week's top times in the 100 and 200 meter dash. Davis cruised in both events at the 3A District 5 meet, as she ran a 11.49 and 23.50 to advance into the Region meet next week. We are now one week closer to the Davis vs Williams showdown at Hodges Stadium on May 4th.

Sydney McGinley- The Hallandale hurdler put on a show in the 110 and 300 hurdles, as she won the 110 and finished 2nd in the 300 hurdles behind Asia McMillon. She set the fastest time of the week in Florida in both events as she ran a 13.70 wind aided in the 100 finals and then finished first in prelims in the 300m with a time of 42.58. Two of the best hurdlers in the state in one district tends to make things a bit  exciting.

Alyssa Richard- The junior shot putter won the 3A District 16 with a week's best for Florida with a throw of 41-5. The junior from Miami Northwestern led her teammate Chanel Dawson to a 1-2 finish, as these two will look to lead the Lady Bulls on the throws side of things.

Laine Roberts- The top pole vaulter was up to her normal competitive nature as she easily won her district meet with the week's top vault of 11-11.75. The Bolles HS sophomore won the 2A District 4 meet as she waits to get her opportunity to pole vault right down the road at UNF in a few weekends.

Tsion Yared- Coming off a weekend in California at Arcadia, there was no jet lag on the track for Yared as she unleashed a school record of 4:52.84 in the 1600 meter. Tsion won the 2A District 15 1600 and 3200 on her way to setting a FL #2/US #15 time in the 1600. The sophomore from Pine Crest HS is looking to improve on her 5th place finish in the 1600 last year at State.
