Less than three weeks after competing in her final NCAA Championship, Lloydricia Cameron dawned the Gator jersey one last time at the Jamaican Senior Championships. The former Miami Northwestern thrower was 8th in the shot put in Oregon, but came away with her first national title this past weekend.
"My series of throws were a struggle due to the conditions of the circle," she said. "Overall, I accept the series because I know that there is more and the journey is about to start for me."
Cameron's mother Virginia Walcott, also competed at the National Stadium, but as a grade school girl at Mount Alvernia in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Knowing she started the family legacy there made the youngster's competition mean more than just trying to make a spot on the team.
"My mom didn't get her chance to experience this level of competition, but I am here to finish it for her by representing Team Jamaica," Cameron noted. "It was a struggle once I landed in Kingston, Jamaica but my mother made everything possible."
One of the nation's top throwers in high school, Cameron represented Team USA in 2013 at the Caribbean Scholastic Invitational in Puerto Rico as well as the World Youth Championships in Ukraine and Pan American Junior Champions in Canada. This will be her first time competing for Jamaica as she waits the for the JAAA to select her for more international competitions
"I knew since my freshman year in college I always wanted to join the Jamaican culture and represent them in any kind of way I could," she said. "Having the opportunity this weekend to compete at the Jamaican Trials was wonderful. It was like a dream come true. I look forward to doing as much as I can for Team Jamaica."
