It has long been a dream of mine to contribute more than just coverage to the cross country and track & field community in the state of Florida. It is through parking that was collected at our flrunners.com Invitational IV cross country meet last fall that we were able to collect the funds to offer two $1000 scholarships to a male and female college-bound student-athlete.
What a difficult decision it proved to be, sorting and debating through the applications of talented and deserving students around the state. I even briefly considered splitting the money up to give multiple awards, but two athletes have been chosen to receive this year's awards.
Our male and female scholarship winners are Enoch Nadler (Keystone Heights) and Jennifer Schwan (Manatee). To each we will contribute $1000 toward their college tuition.
Nadler maintained a near perfect GPA, while using his senior year to finish 3rd in the 3A state cross country meet and finished his high school career with a 4th place 9:27 showing in the 3200 at the Track State Finals. He also lifeguards, was named to the Who's Who of American High School Students, and coaches and Under 8 Recreational Soccer team--among many other extracurricular, religious, and community service activities.
Schwan proved herself to be a determined overachiever, setting and exceeding her goals in cross country peaking at 20:11 her senior year. Jen was active in the community volunteering with the Bradenton Runners Club and Hospice. Meanwhile, she was involved helped to help put together her school news television and newspaper, was a member of student council, peer counseling, church group, and all while holding down a job. (Jenn, you can come pick up your shoelaces now!)
We salute all of the fine individuals that applied--you all represent what makes our sport so unique and great. We wish all of you the sincerest best of luck in your futures. You make us all proud to call ourselves Florida Runners!
