Pre-Meet Chat With The Dunbar Duo Of Hurdling Greatness

Dunbar High School in Fort Myers has a very unique and fortunate situation right now in having arguably one of the nation's top boys' hurdlers in the country in Leonard Mustari as well as one of the top girls' hurdlers in the nation as his female counterpart in Lucheyona Weaver.

Close friends on and off the track, they just signed their national letter of intent to have each other's back and support for at least the next four years at the next level signing with a top-class HBCU track & field program in North Carolina A&T State University this past week.

While running consistently under 14 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles this spring, Mustari has really come on late in the long jump as it's debatable which is his best event. He will have a highly anticipated clash in the FHSAA 3A state finals with Jerry Philippe as they are currently the nation's fastest two hurdlers in the 110 hurdles.

Earlier in the season when they faced off at Louie Bing, Mustari acknowledged in his lone loss of the outdoor season that his steps were off as he was still training and prepping for indoor 60-meter hurdles races which he eventually won the adidas Indoor Nationals title in that event.

Lucheyona Weaver is a very impressive all-around young lady. She fessed up to her incredible academics as one of the top performer students at Dunbar High School with a GPA over 4.20. She could have received an academic scholarship just as easily instead of her well-earned athletic scholarship to North Carolina A&T. She is looking forward to her matchups this weekend in particular with the top hurdlers from the powerhouse program known as St. Thomas Aquinas in Eddiyah Frye and Alexis Glasco.

Weaver is no stranger to doing multiple events at all her meets this season typically with both hurdles (100H and 300H), 100 meter dash and 4x100 meter relay. Despite being her last event and likely her least favorite, Weaver aims this weekend to really push herself with the competition present in the 300 meter hurdles to get the times she's capable of in one of the toughest races on the track.

This weekend, the Dunbar Tigers Classic will be a showcase of what they have helped build and grow as the star names of the Dunbar High School program under the direction of head coach Guy Thomas. Dunbar will host over 30 high schools in one of the most competitive invitational meets found in the state of Florida so far this outdoor season.

It is the first major invitational meet hosted at Dunbar High School in over 15 years as the school's track was literally cement to train on until the local school district put in a newly surfaced rubberized track surface last summer.

Both will face intense competition included top talent making the trip across I-75 to Fort Myers from South Florida schools in the Miami and Fort Lauderdale area.

Make sure to watch their races on their home track as well as the rest of the outstanding fields in each event found for the first annual Dunbar Tigers Classic.
