Tiandra Ponteen won the 400m and Josh Walker took first in the 110m hurdles on the second day of competition at the 2004 North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association Championships on Saturday at Université de Sherbrooke Stadium.
The United States team, which is being coached by UF men's track and field coach Mike Holloway, also fared well during the second day, winning 10 of 12 events. The U.S. team captured seven of 10 event finals on the first day of the meet on Friday.
Ponteen took home first in the 400m with a time of 51.19, beating 2004 NCAA Outdoor champion Dee Dee Trotter of Tennessee, who was second in 51.46. Ponteen also defeated UCLA's Monique Henderson, who took second at NCAAs and finished third on Saturday. The school record holder in the event, Ponteen will next compete for St. Kitts in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Walker, the 2004 NCAA Outdoor champion in the 110m hurdles and the UF record holder in the event, won the race with a time of 13.78. Michael Mitchum came in second with a time of 13.86.
Kyle Farmer also competed on Saturday as he finished third in the 200m. 2004 NCAA Outdoor champion Wallace Spearman won the event for the U.S. in a time of 20.59. Churandy Martina was second in 20.75 and Farmer was third with a time of 20.85.
Sekou Clarke also competed on Saturday. In the first round of the 400m, Clarke posted the third-fastest time of the day at 46.72 and will compete in the finals on Sunday.
