Mekhi Gammons Sprints To Fast Double Indoors At VA Showcase

Hialeah-Miami Lakes junior Mekhi Gammons ventured up to Virginia Beach this weekend for the VA Showcase to compete individually in the boys 300 and 500 meter dash. Despite the nation's 10th fastest athlete at 400 meters last outdoor season as a sophomore with a 46.76 best, Gammons was not in the top-seeded invitational heat for either event since he has had limited race opportunities at both race distances of 300 and 500.

That did not deter Gammons from winning his heat in both races with quick US top 10 performances. In the 300 meter dash on Friday evening, Gammons clocked a US #6 time of 34.40 with the 4th fastest time overall as the top finisher in his heat. It is also the fourth-fastest 300-meter time indoors in state history.

Gammons led his 300-meter heat from start to finish but had some greater competition in his 500-meter heat on Saturday with Austin Rice of Battlefield (VA) leading him thru the first lap and a half. After hitting the 300 mark in 36 seconds high, Gammons took over the race on the final lap to pull away with a US #5 performance of 1:05.13. Only Tyrese Cooper at 1:01.88, Ashton Schwarztman at 1:02.67, and Samuel Austin at 1:04.80 have run faster indoors in Florida high school history than Gammons now.
