FHSAA 1A State Meet Girls Recap

FHSAA 1A Girls 100m Dash
 Azaria Whitehurst (Fort Meade) 11.59

Fort Meade sophomore Azaria Whitehurst showed at her regional meet a week ago that she was in peak form and ready to defend her state title from a year ago in the 1A girls 100 meter dash when she defeated one of her toughest challengers for the state meet in another speedy sophomore McKenzie Travis of Evangelical Christian twice at the 1A Region 3 meet in Naples.

Throw in last year's FLYRA Middle School state champion at 100 meters in Wildwood freshman Ja'Kyra Corbin, Whitehurst would have at least two contenders in the field with her capable of going sub 12 seconds in the 100 meter dash with her.

In the start of the state meet race in Gainesville, Whitehurst got off to a poor one compared to Travis and Corbin who had the advantage on her through the first 50 meters of the race. But once Whitehurst finally got up to speed, she poured it on to pull away with a speedy lifetime best for all-conditions at 11.59 for another state title as the wind-aided +2.7 reading might have helped her and rest of the fast section field to see PR's across the board.

Travis would take state runner-up in 11.71, while the freshmen Corbin clocked a 11.79 PR and another underclassman in Holy Trinity sophomore Maya Collins claimed 4th with her first sub 12 second performance at 11.95.

The talent for 1A girls in the sprints in certainly rich for years to come with this group of sub 12 girls in the 100 meter dash.
