Michelle Smith came to Montverde Academy by way of St. Croix, US Virgin Islands and she has been a welcomed and gifted addition to the Florida high school track & field season this past spring when she proved to be one of the state's most versatile athletes. Whether it was the hurdles in the 100, 300, or 400 meter hurdles or hurdles-less races ranging from 100 to 800 meters.
Smith was ranked US #3 in the 400 meter hurdles at 58.61 as a national champion (adidas Outdoor Nationals), US #7 in the 300 meter hurdles at 41.56 as well as a state champion (2A), and among the state's fastest in the 800 meter run with a 2:10 personal best. Smith was also a Carifta Games champion in the 400 meter hurdles and 800 meter run as well as a silver medalist in the 100 meter hurdles.
Distance runner Ava Wyant really made that sophomore year leap becoming one of the state's top tier distance runners dropping her times down to 4:53 in the 1600 meter run and 2:13 in the 800 meter run setting herself to compete for future state titles. She had run 2:24 in the 800 and 5:17 in the 1600 as her freshman year bests in the year prior to make huge improvements in 12 months time. Her state meet 1600 meter race was particularly impressive when she was able to hang late in the race with the national class duo of Mary Ellen Eudaly and Caroline Lehman from Cambridge Christian en route to her 1600 PR in a third place effort.
