Freshman Emilie Amaro is the Real Deal

Once the school year ends in August, cross country runners lace up their shoes and begin a summer training program to condition for the demanding Fall cross country season. Cypress Bay coach Iain Gascoine can tell you how important it is to train during the summer.

"We put in well over 450 miles over the summer," Gascoine said. "In addition we went to a Cross Country Camp in North Corolina."

Cypress Bay freshman, Emilie Amaro, is the runner to watch this season. Two races, Two wins. Amaro won her first girls' individual title at Tree Tops Park August 30th in 19:14, beating out Cooper City senior Jacy Kruzel. Gascoine's Lighting took second at the event with 33 points. Amaro's first big meet was the FIU/Lourdes Invite September 11th. With a stunning first place finish in 17:58, one can quickly assume that it's going to be a magical four years for Gascoine and his cross country program.

"I was very happy for the young athlete on her first performance. She did an excellent job and this is when I realized this young freshman was for real,"Gascoine said. "We understand she is young, shy, and reserved. She has been blending in very well especially after her first race."

Amaro joins team leader Alaina Miller, her running partner during the summer, on a team that may very well cause many surprises as the season gets closer and closer to regional and state competition.

"We will be looking very good in October if every one stays healthy. I hope to have all seven cylinders rolling by then," Gascoine said.
