Teams Converge for Palm Beach County Championship

Teams from all over Palm Beach County made the drive to the Belle Glade Municipal Golf Course to compete in the County championships on October 14.

Big names such as Nicole Schappert of Pope John Paul II and Jake Lawson of John I. Leonard, favorites to win the girls' and boys' races, didn't disappoint.

The two captured first place, helping lead their team to first place finishes over tough competition such as the Spanish River girls' team and the Wellington boys.

Nicole Schappert, who won in 18:10, lifted the Pope John Paul II Eagles to the County title, aided by strong performances by her teammates Jackie Areson (18:49) and Jenna Redfearn (20:48).

Lawson ran a 16:49, beating second place finisher Andrew Woodhouse (17:01) by twelve seconds. John I Leonard took three of the top 15 spots to capture the County title.

Spanish River and Wellington got second and third in the girls' competition, and Wellington and Jupiter Christian took the next two spots on the boys' side.

The north conference Palm Beach Gardens boys' won their third in a row, and the Jupiter girls also continued their winning ways within the conference.

The central conference was won once again by John I. Leonard on the boys' side, and first year team Park Vista was victorious on the girls' side.

Wellington's boys won the western conference title with 18 points and their girls completed the western conference sweep with their title.

Pope John Paul II's girls continued their dominance, winning the southern conference, while Spanish River won the boys' team title.

During the awards ceremony, as John I. Leonard was presented their trophy for winning County, Jake Lawson took the bullhorn and dedicated his team's run to Paul Michael Felsberg.

Felsberg, 27, was a Marine and former captain for John I. Leonard's cross country team. He was killed in action in Iraq on October 13.

A teary eyed Roy Chernock thanked his runners as he said a few words about his friend and former star.
