UM Cruised to Dual Meet Victory

BRUTVAN LEADS HURRICANE TO SWEEP

MIAMI, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami junior Alex Brutvan (Boca Raton, Fla.) recorded his fourth career collegiate victory to lead the Miami men's cross country team to a pair of sweeps against FIU and Florida Memorial in a double-dual meet Friday at Tropical Park in Miami.

Miami, ranked 15th in the South Region, recorded a 15-49 win over FIU, and a 15-50 win over Florida Memorial.

Brutvan completed the four-mile course in a time of 21:51 and finished just one second ahead of sophomore teammate Tom Berry (Stamford, Conn.). Brutvan and Berry have finished one-two for the Hurricanes in 12 consecutive races.

Miami runners recorded the top-6 places with sophomore Zach Castiglione (Brighton, Mich.) taking third (21:55), sophomore Jon Scheiner (Katy, Texas) placing fourth (21:58), junior James Mullaly (Ellicott City, Md.) finishing fifth (22:09), and senior Billy Bludgus (Bayonne, N.J.) taking sixth (22:16).

The men's cross country will now prepare for the ACC Cross Country Championships, October 30, in College Park, Md.


SCHULTZ DOMINATES FIELD

MIAMI, Fla. (hurricanesports.com) – University of Miami junior Melanie Schultz (Davison, Mich.) completed the 5K course in a time of 18:04 to capture her second individual victory in four races this season at the UM-FIU dual meet this Friday at Tropical Park in Miami, Fla.

Schultz, who has finished no worse than third in any race this season, was named the ACC Cross Country Performer of the Week last weekend following her third-place finish at the Disney Invitational.

Schultz dominated the field on Friday defeating her next closest competitor, FIU's Diedra Witherspoon, by nearly two minutes.

Other Hurricanes placing in the top-10 included freshman Delia Phlatts (Silver Springs, Md.) who finished sixth in a time of 20:27, sophomore Lindsay Rohrs (St. Charles, Ill.) who placed seventh (20:36), senior Marilyn Ruiz (Hallandale, Fla.) who finished ninth (21:13) and Ginou Etienne (Miami Central) who took 10th (21:56).

FIU edged the Hurricanes to win the team competition, 28-29.

Miami returns to action on October 30 with the ACC Cross Country Championships in College Park, Md.
