The biggest challenge at the Rutherford Rams Relays was the wind. Participants from 18 schools across the Florida Panhandle fought winds in excess of 20 miles per hour. Runners had a nice tailwind on one side of the track and a fierce headwind on the other. This was one challenge that was met with strength as many runners had personal best times in their races. The Fort Walton Beach High School girls and boys 4x800 Relay teams both took first place. Senior Holley Stanton commented that the wind was pretty rough. "I did okay in the first lap, but the second lap was pretty hard." Pole vaulters also had issues with the bar being knocked off by the wind.
One of the highlights of the meet was Deiontrez Mount, a junior at Fort Walton. Mount took 1st place in the 110 high hurdles with a time of 14.48 and helped lead his 4x100 relay team to victory as well. He already has colleges looking at him for his talents, but commented that he will not make any decisions until next year. He will definitely be one to watch. Kayla Parker, a Senior at Port St. Joe was also impressive, running a 14.41 in the 100 High Hurdles. She will be one to keep an eye as she heads to the University of Kentucky next year. Both Kayla and Deiontrez ran elite times for the hurdles and Kayla also had an elite score for the long jump with a distance of 18' 2.5". The overall team win went to Fort Walton Beach High School for both the boys and girls teams. Several middle school teams also participated with the Ruckel girls and boys teams taking the overall team win. More Coverage
