These FL Athletes Could Win at The VA Showcase

Top Florida Boys and Girls to Watch at the VA Showcase

Florida will be well represented at the VA Showcase this weekend, sending a deep group of elite sprinters, middle-distance runners, relay squads, and field event standouts north for one of the season's first major indoor tests. With meet records in play and national contenders spread across multiple events, several Florida athletes are poised to make a major early-season statement.

If all of the top entries move through to the finals, the boys' 55m shapes up as one of the marquee events of the meet, and one Florida athlete is right at the center of the conversation. Zamarii Sanders of Cardinal Newman should be a major contender. Sanders ran a 6.71 last season in winning the Florida High School Indoor Championships and went on outdoors to win the NBNO 100m and 200m. The meet record is 6.68 by Jayden Finley of Texas in 2024, and with the field assembled, this record may be in jeopardy. In addition to Sanders, the field includes Tate Taylor, who ran 7.71 in 2025, Jake Odey-Jordan, who currently leads the nation with a 6.64, and Alijah Monroe, who has run 6.25 (55m) this season and sits at US #1 in the 55m.

Sanders will be busy and just may be better at the 300m, but he's proven he can handle the load on the biggest stages. He's run 33.59.

Boys 4x200m Relay

Florida will be well represented in a relay that could be historic. Representing Florida is a team from Flanagan that ran 1:25.46 outdoors at NBNO last season and returns its entire quartet. Indoors may be a challenge, but the boys from Flanagan are young and have plenty of speed. Set to run for Flanagan are: Mekhi Chamberlain, Ronald Daniels, Jordan Evans, Allan Harris, Raymond Hawkins, and Jacob Thomas. The meet record is 1:24.37. Along with Flanagan, watch for Archbishop Carroll, the three-time defending champions and the current national record holders, and Bullis, which ran 1:24.64 indoors last year and is always loaded with talent.

Girls Sprints

Florida's girls are loaded across multiple events, with Taylor-Nicole Overton (Vero Beach HS) entering as a contender in both the 55 meters (7.12), 300m (38.17), and 500 meters (1:12.21). She is the current state leader in all three of those events. Outdoors last spring, she was the 4A State 400m champion, running a 53.19. She was 2nd in the 200m with a 23.99.

Montverde Academy arrives with one of the deepest rosters at the meet. The Florida squad features standouts like Dasia Reed (23.30 in the 200m), Arima TurnerDaQuana Howell, and Jizelle Holland, while also fielding loaded relay teams in the 4x200, 4x400, and sprint medley relay. Montverde's versatility across the sprint and middle-distance events puts them in the mix for podium finishes.

Reed is just a junior, and last year she was 2nd in the VA showcase 200m with a 24.29, won the Florida High School Indoor Championships 60m in 7.35, and was 2nd in the NBNI in the 200m with a 23.30. Outdoors, she was 2nd in the 2A 100m at State (11.52), and won the 200m in 23.89.

Girls 4x800 Meter Relay

The IMG Academy (Ascender Elitegirls are the defending indoor champions and set the meet record last year with an 8:46.04. All four members return this season; however, Danielle Graham, according to the registration, is not scheduled to run. In her place will be Mia Dunavant

Anyla Robinson - 2:14.66,
Mackenzie Winning - 2:12.67,
Danielle Graham - 2:09.01

Boys 4x800 Meter Relay

IMG Academy (Ascender Elite)

The boys ran 7:34 outdoors at Penn Relays last spring and finished 3rd at NBNO, returning three of four athletes. With Benjamin Henry having graduated, the team's cross-country results suggest they're ready to run a fast 4x800m. The meet record is 7:36.99 by Albemarle of VA in 2009. Registered to run are: Lucas Brighty, Juan Moncayo, Ezechiel Bowe, Hayden Bearden, and Matthew Dodds. The key for the Ascenders is a healthy Matthew Dodds. Dodd was injured early in the fall XC season and did not race in the XC postseason.

Girls Shot Put

J'Nia Simpson of Tampa Catholic brings national-level credentials to the shot put, entering with a throw of 48-4.32 (14.74m), currently ranked US #3

J'Nai Simpson's 14.74m Toss is US #3 in the Shot Put

It's a big weekend ahead for Florida T&F athletes as we head into the meat of the 2026 Indoor season. Florida's presence at the VA Showcase will be impossible to ignore. As one of the first major indoor meets of the season, the event offers a proving ground, and several of Florida's athletes are arriving ready to prove they belong among the nation's best.

If momentum from this weekend carries forward, don't be surprised if many of these names become fixtures atop national rankings as the indoor season unfolds.

There are some big names running in the 60 including Mr. 9.89 Tate Taylor. Or you have but the one who we think Cardinal Newman's Zamarii Sanders who is the defending NBNO 100 and 200 champion. Don't forget US #1 in the 60 (6.64) Jake Odey-Jordan. Combine them with current US #1 Alijah Monroe who's gone 6.25 (55) this season and you got yourself a few chances at the record.

Boys 4x200m Relay

Flanagan HS: They ran 1:25.46 last outdoor season at NBNO and return their entire quartet. Indoors is very different from outdoors but speed is speed.

Here are some of the teams entered though that we think could come close, if not break, the record of 1:24.37...

Archbishop Carroll: Three-time defending champions and current national record holders. Head Coach Victor Blackett will certainly have them prepared and ready to run.

The Bullis School: They have had some recent transfers that put them back in contention to break the record after they ran a brutally close 1:24.64 last indoors. We have yet to receive confirmation if they will fully load it but if they do, they certainly have a shot.

Girls 4x800m Relay

There is one team here who could do something very special and that is IMG Academy of Florida. They set the record last indoors running 8:46.04 and could go after it again. Their record setting quartet was Anyla Robinson (2:14.66), Aurora Bertelsen del Solar (2:09.70), Mackenzie Winning (2:12.67), and Danielle Graham (2:09.01).

Of those four, all four return. That means if they are fit and ready to run we could be in for something special. If XC times are an indication, they looked strong throughout and had some PR's so all the signs are looking good.

Boys 4x800m Relay

Ascender Elite

Similarly to the girls' race, IMG Academy of Florida enters the meet loaded and ready to go fast. They went 7:34 outdoors at Penn and finished 3rd at NBNO. Their team of Pedro Abreu, Benjamin Henry, Lucas Brighty, Matthew Dodds returns three of their four. They are looking to replace Benjamin Henry and if XC was an indication, they should have something in store for us there.

This record is going to be fun to chase considering it was set by a Virginia team, Albemarle, back in 2009. The time to beat is 7:36.99. It is the oldest relay record by a margin of eight years on the boys' side.
