Miami's STU Names Adrian Melero New Cross Country Coach

PRESS RELEASE FROM ST. THOMAS UNIVERSITY

On Thursday, June 13, 2002 St. Thomas University named Adrian Melero as the Head Men's & Women's Cross Country Coach. Melero will be preparing the Men's and Women's cross country teams in his first season at St. Thomas University this fall. He brings 9 years of coaching experience, working in both Dade and Broward counties. In Dade, he coached the LaSalle High School and MAST Academy teams during his undergraduate days, where he guided MAST Academy to consecutive state final appearances after fielding a team at the school for the first time. He later served as an Assistant Coach at Florida International University for two seasons.

Most recently, he coached the cross country and track teams at Flanagan High School in Pembroke Pines, Florida where the boys track team captured the district title. While at Flanagan High School he had the opportunity to develop Paul Cross, currently the nation's No. #1 800-meter runner, into an All-American and state champion.

Coach Melero's goals at St. Thomas University are to improve the individual times of every runner on the Men's and Women's Cross Country team from last season. He also plans to contend for the conference title with the men's team, while improving the women's conference standings with new recruits. Coach Melero graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education and a Master in Exercise Physiology. He continues to be an avid researcher in the most cutting edge information on sports nutrition and training techniques. He is also an elementary Physical Education Teacher at the Mater Academy Charter School and has been a teacher for 5 years.
