Just a day removed from running a meet record 13:57.94 to win the 5000m and claim the U.S. No. 1 time, Mantecon was back on the track and had to battle through a chaotic, physical race to capture the 2-mile title in 8:48.02. The championship race unfolded cautiously, with no one eager to take control of the pace. Through the early stages, everyone up front jostled for position as the field stayed tightly packed in the slow first mile with everyone pushing, shoving, and what appeared to be an intentional boxing in of Mantecon as everyone fought for position.
But with 1000 meters remaining, Mantecon made a decisive move on the field, surging to the front, and he quickly separated himself, opening a gap that proved insurmountable. Caden Leonard (TX)mounted the strongest challenge, but Mantecon maintained control to secure the win, while Leonard finished second in 8:49.46.
The victory showcased Mantecon's impressive strength and speed. He negative split, covering the first mile in 4:35.75 and closed with a 4:12.27, highlighted by a sub-2:00 final 800 meters.
