2005 CLASS 1A GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY RANKINGS (For November 2)

By Gary Droze

This update reflects results from Districts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6. HTA is still the class of the class, Oak Hall & PK Yonge have moved much closer to Maclay, and spots 5 through 8 can easily flip around, based on that all-important #5 scorer for the contending teams.

TOP TEN TEAMS

1. Holy Trinity Academy. Butler's Bombers handily won their district with a team average of 19:44. Still no signs of weakness from the defending state champs.

2. Maclay. Team average of 20:21 at a fast district course means that even though they improved, Marauders are no longer head and shoulders above their pursuers. Won't the region meet be interesting?

3. Oak Hall. District meet (20:18 average) shows they are back in the saddle, with three horses and four ponies. If those ponies feel their oats in a few weeks, they'll be running down some thoroughbreds at Dade City's horse track!

4. PK Yonge. Ditto the above notes for these girls. 20:17 average in a tiebreaker loss (21:30 versus 21:38 sixth girls) nailbiter to Oak Hall. PK and OH remind me of the science fiction classic where a boxer is cloned and then made to battle himself.

5. Canterbury. District winners by a whisker over St John Neuman, with 20:40/21:13/21:14/21:25/22:37. Looks like the stage is set for an exciting Region 3 meet.

6. St John Neuman. District loss by a whisker to Canterbury, with 20:23/20:52/21:33/22:01/22:02. Two rounds to go in this "best-of-three" post-season series, with the third round (State!) trumping the first two.

7. Trinity Prep. Nice pack near the front to win District 3 with a team average of 21:34.

8. Shorecrest Prep. Dropped a few spots only because no district info available at press time. A nice showing versus Berkley Prep, et al, will boost them right back.

9. Aucilla Christian. Still some work to do at #3 and #4, but the Sorensen sisters went 20:09/20:25/20:53 at District 2, taking off like a flock of "Free Birds" over the course (Ronnie VanZant Memorial Park…go Skynyrd!).

10. TIE: Dade Christian and Berkley Prep. The latest info I have on both squads shows them virtually tied at team averages of about 22:35. We'll need to wait until regions to find out what the Dade Christian distaffs have been up to after school each day.

2A Girls Rankings Post-District (Districts 1-6)
By: Tyrone Gayle

Due to the damage done by the hurricanes, districts 7 and 8 were unable to go off. So the individuals/teams from those districts will be left out (i.e. Pope John Paul, Jensen Beach, etc.) Usually, teams take districts relatively easy in order to get ready for the pounding of regionals and state, but the teams in 2A seemed to miss that memo. Impressive times all across the board especially from Bona Jones, and the Episcopal girls squad. A thorough and complete preview will be done for the state meet.

Girls 3 A Rankings 10/31/05
By Tim Brooks
States are looming but there is one more hurdle to get there. I am going to break things down by each region then list the top 32 teams followed by the individuals. Each region will be listed in "projected" order of finish
Region 1 Districts 1-2 ( It should be a tight race between Chiles and Nease as both teams won their districts. I believe Chiles is making a strong push back somewhere in the top 5. I also noticed that Chiles had Kelly Savery back their top runner from last year. Fleming High was the biggest surprise finish of the group here. ) Projected order of Region 1 finish. Nease, Chiles, Ft Walton Beach, Choctawhatchee, Washington, Fleming Island, Leon and Gainesville.
Region 2 Districts 3-4 ( This region will be fun to watch as it has three of the top four state teams. Wharton showed their state pedigree by winning their district. Wesley Chapel has been interesting to watch along with George Jenkins a program with past state pedigree making a move for the state dance) Projected order of Region 2 finish. Plant, Wharton, Vanguard, Brandon, Wesley Chapel, Lake Region, Gulf and George Jenkins.
Region 3 Districts 5-6 (Lots of teams on the cusp in this region as there is no clear top ten program but lots of teams that could finish 10th to 20th in states. Seminole and Ft Myers won their districts respectively and should be the top contenders for their region in a tight race.) Projected order of Region 3 finish. Ft. Myers, Seminole, Barron Collier, Lely, Mariner, Venice, Lakewood Ranch and North Ft Myers
Region 4 Districts 7-8 (Tracking this region is especially tough because district 8 is hard to find coverage. There could truly be a large dark horse candidate I overlooked here. Number 1 state ranked Satellite and Oak Ridge are the top powerhouses here) Projected order of Region 4 finish. Satellite, Oak Ridge, St Thomas Aquinas, Rockledge, New Smyrna Beach, Ft Lauderdale and Sebastian River
Please email me at ktkbrooks@hotmail.com if you have any information on any teams or individuals that I may have missed

Pre-Regional Rankings 11/1/05

TEAMS

1- Chiles (Region 1)- I like looking at ranges of 1-5 runners. With Blocker being such a strong #1, that is a little tough, but the range on Chiles from 2-5 at Districts was 12 seconds, and from 2-7 was 21 seconds.

2- St. Pete Seminole (Region 3)- Will be in the hunt for its first State Championship, but better be ready for a much improved Chiles team, if they are to win.

3- Ft. Myers (Region 3)- Will be interesting to see how they race St. Pete Seminole at Regionals. Should learn a lot from both teams this weekend.

4- Wharton (Region 2)- Courtoy is back, gives Wharton a nice 1-2 with him and Baker.

5- Brandon (Region 2)- Finished a close second to George Jenkins at District.

6- George Jenkins (Region 2)- Impressive run at Districts.

7- Vanguard (Region 2)- Finished 2nd to Wharton in District 3.

8- North Fort Myers (Region 3)- Finished a close 3rd behind Ida Baker in District 6 without their top runner Noe Pena. No report on why he was not in the results.

9- Ida Baker (Region 3)- Finished 2nd to a strong Fort Myers team in Districts.

10- Land O' Lakes (Region 2)- Finished 3rd in District 3, behind Wharton and Vanguard.

Honorable Mention-

St. Thomas Aquinas (Region 4)- how will the extra week off affect them?

Fort Walton Beach (Region 1)- Had a nice run in District 1, finishing second to top ranked Chiles.

Choctawhatchee (Region 1)- Finished 3rd in District 1, behind Chiles and Fort Walton Beach

Washington (Region 1)- Finished 4th in District 1, behind Chiles, Fort Walton Beach, and Choctawhatchee.

FACA Boys 4A Rankings 11-1-05
By Mike Hill

1. Buchholz – Solid win at District 1. Not the fastest average, but the best pack with a :26 spread!

2. Flagler Palm Coast – Close 2nd to Buchholz at D1. Their front runners will be top 5 the next 2 weeks, and that's not very many points. Sophomore Earle key to their chances of winning.

3. Boone – I know they were runner-up last week, but I think they get the edge here in the make up of this group. Will senior Olivera close the gap?

4. Lyman – The Greyhounds sit here, but there may only be a mere 20 points separating the group! If they close the gap to #5, they could win.

5. Miami Columbus – I have no idea how the guys from down south fared in the hurricane, but they are a legit top 5 team.

6. Colonial – It is actually impossible for the Grenadiers to run worse than at District. Even if they run that way again, they are too talented not to get to Dade City. Freshman have played a big role for Coach P. this year. Funny thing is, they could win the region meet too!

7. Winter Springs – The Bears may be #7 in FL, but they are fighting for a #6 spot in their region meet. 1:27 1-5 spread is what they were last week, and that's without normal #4 man. Have defeated WP head to head this year.

8. Winter Park – The Park may be on the outside looking in. They have even odds on the last qualifying spot, but must race to their potential. Most recent race had them ahead of TC.

9. Timber Creek – Now the Wolves also should be even money on the last R1 spot based on their Metro meet of 2 weeks ago. They soundly defeated WP.

10. Cypress Bay – These guys sit in the same position as Miami Columbus. Just not sure how they are faring.

Others: The fact of the matter is, teams like Sickles, St. Pete, Sarasota, Sarasota-Riverview, Palm Bay, and Vero Beach will all probably get out of region 2, along with teams like Varella etc. from regions 3 and 4 all will have a great chance of being at the state meet. With the lack of meets from down south, I hesitate to try and put these guys in order. Region meets this week will allow an intelligent look at the top 24 teams… remaining. I am positive 2 of the top 10 teams in the state will be sitting at home come November 12th.

Individuals
1. Justin Harbor FPC
2. Aaron Kindt Boone
3. Alex Wills Colonial
4. Anthony Morales FPC
5. Bobby Saltsman Lyman
6. Richie Bonilla Cypress Bay
7. Andres Davilla Miami Columbus
8. Kyle Miller Timber Creek
9. Zach Deveau Sarasota Riverview
10. Kellam Bartley Buchholz

Please note, there are a handful of guys from down south that I just don't know where they fit in.
