BOYS WINNER: Devin Screen - Senior @ Godby

After finishing runner-up last year in the discus Devin Screen was determined to win a state title his senior year. Screen was an integral part of Godby's back to back state championship runs placing in the shot put as well the past two seasons. Coach Jesse Forbes says his role on the team is huge and he will be missed dearly.

"It's hard to replace a guy like him because he works so hard. He's so powerful and so quick."

Screen used that strength and explosiveness to capture the gold medal in both the shot put and discus at the Golden South Classic. He launched the discus 179-04.00 and hurdled the shot put 52-03.75. Forbes says it is a great accomplishment to go to a meet like the Golden South and step up your game.

"His goal was to go down to the Golden South and break the school record in the discus which is 185 feet and was held by one of his former track coaches. Although he came up short you can't beat a first place in the shot put and in the discus.  When he called me and told me he had won I praised him because he had been working from January up until now for this.  A lot of times he'd go out on the track and throw for three hours. It doesn't matter who the competition is he is throwing against he's not going to get intimidated."

The senior hopes to have one more shot at the school record. His coach says they plan to travel to New Balance Nationals in June and that to break that mark it will take  that same level of hard work and dedication. Record or no record Forbes will still be proud.

"As long as he gives it 100 percent and wants it very bad he can accomplish his goals. If he gets it we are going to praise him. If he doesn't were still going to praise him and tell him he did a great job in high school. 185 feet is pretty far for a high school kid. "

When Screen isn't in the circle throwing the shot or the disc the senior can be found challenging the sprinters on the track. Forbes says his need to try everything is what he will remember the most.

"He tries the long jump, triple jump, high jump, runs the 100 and 200. I tell him he needs to be careful because he's a thrower. He's the type of kid who would try an event and try to compete against our top guys and he'd give them a run for their money for the first 40 yards. I'll miss his competitiveness, his heart, and his great attitude."
