Boys Meet Preview: 44th Annual Spanish River XC Invitational
The boys' races at the 44th Annual Spanish River XC Invitational offer three very different competitive pictures. The Race of Champions brings together many of South Florida's strongest teams and individuals. Expect some tough, close competition for both individual and team honors. The 1A/2A race features a similarly tight individual contest, with Southwest Florida Christian having a clear depth advantage in the team race. The 3A/4A race is the least settled on paper, but it's XC, so expect a surprise.
The rankings and times below reflect the season-best and composite team lists supplied before the meet. They are useful indicators, but performances from different courses are not exact head-to-head projections.
Boys Race of Champions
Individual preview
Mater Lakes' Kevin Aguilar enters with the fastest mark in the ROC field. His 16:00 season best ranks No. 24 in Florida across all classifications and No. 10 in 3A, but his advantage is slight. Doral Academy's Martin Fernandez has run 16:01.33, No. 27 statewide and No. 12 in 4A. Just 1.33 seconds separates the two.
Gulliver Prep's Kayaan Ghaffar could be up front, too. His 16:10.44 ranks No. 36 statewide and No. 3 in 2A. Atlantic Christian's Elijah Arterburn is only a few seconds behind at 16:16.87 and sits No. 3 in 1A. Expect Ghaffar and Arterburn to join Aguilar and Fernandez at the front, especially if the opening mile is controlled and no one goes out fast early.
The next group includes American Heritage's Willie McKenney, No. 36 in 3A at 16:41.93, and Jensen Beach's Grant Belville, No. 41 in 3A at 16:45.40.
Aguilar owns the fastest seed, but the near dead heat between him and Fernandez should define the race. Ghaffar and Arterburn are close enough by times run to lead or push the pace, especially early on. We may see a small group up front through the mile, with someone taking charge just after the two-mile.
Team preview
Doral Academy is the team to beat. It is the highest-ranked squad in the ROC field at No. 5 statewide with a 16:40.37 average. Fernandez supplies the low score, and Doral's remaining projected scorers have run 16:31.05, 16:48.54, 16:56.07 and 17:04.88. That front five gives Doral both quality and enough depth to absorb a less-than-perfect race from one runner.
Gulliver Prep follows at No. 10 statewide with a 16:48.97 average, and Columbus is No. 13 at 16:57.40. Gulliver counters with Ghaffar and three more ranked 2A runners. Columbus may have the best pack of the two with its five scorers ranging from 16:28.36 to 17:15.60, a 47.24-second spread. Doral may have the edge on paper, but the gap is small, so watch for Gulliver or Columbus to challenge if they have strong performances.
Braddock, ranked No. 16 statewide, and host Spanish River, No. 17, are separated by only 13 points. Spanish River may be the surprise, with their top five packed just 9.26 seconds apart, from 17:04.93 to 17:14.19. A tight finishing pack can make a difference in a team's performance on a given day.
Based solely on season-best performances, Doral takes the team title, with Gulliver and Columbus as challengers, and Braddock and Spanish River in the best positions to disrupt that order.
Note: Belen Jesuit has a "B" team entered in the ROC, and I couldn't obtain the names of the individuals entered. They are racing at the Southern Showcase in Huntsville (AL)on Saturday, where they have 10 boys entered. (Mantecon, Cruz, Veloso, Michalak, Jaramillo, Salom, Bodah, De Armas, Garcia and Lima.)
Boys 1A/2A Race
Individual preview
FAU High's Michael Gomez brings the fastest mark among the athletes in the 1A/2A Boys Race. His 16:22.76 ranks No. 6 in 2A and gives him the top seed.
The chase group is small and crosses both classifications. Highlands Christian's Benjamin Francis is No. 11 in 1A at 16:36.16, Marathon HS's Lucian Burns is No. 12 at 16:37.02, and Southwest Florida Christian's Nash Akers is No. 13 at 16:40.84. Only 4.68 seconds separate those three season bests, setting up a strong race up front and a possible challenge to Gomez if the pace stays conservative.
Westminster Academy's Lucas Latimore has run 16:55.60, while Pine Crest's Emilio Tobon is just behind at 16:56.81. Both are credible top-five threats. The next group includes Cardinal Gibbons' Job DeOjeda at 17:07.12, Wellen Park's Chase Marshall at 17:07.84, and Pine Crest's Cooper Baylis-Gaba at 17:25.35.
Gomez is the top seed, but Francis, Burns and Akers are close enough that positioning and the final mile could decide the race. Akers also has the added team incentive of leading the strongest projected squad in the field.
Team preview
Southwest Florida Christian has the most complete résumé in the 1A/2A field. The team is No. 39 in the statewide all-classes list with a 17:30.24 average. Its projected five includes Akers at 16:40.84, followed by Ty Piper, Shepard Anderson, Aiden Stratton, and Liam Piper between 17:33.10 and 17:50.00. All five are ranked in the 1A Top 50, making Southwest Florida Christian the only team in this race with documented scoring depth.
Pine Crest, No. 75 statewide, has two strong low scorers in Tobon and Baylis-Gaba, plus Edward Wang at 17:29.76. The question for Pine Crest is the gap to the fourth and fifth runners. On paper it's a 1:53.22 spread. If they can close up the back end, they can make the team race significantly tighter.
Wellen Park is No. 88 statewide and has a dependable front in Marshall and Larry Stubbings, but its 2:15.85 1-5 spread makes place-saving at Nos. 4 and 5 essential. It's a large field and other teams may enter the picture, but Southwest Florida Christian is the clear pre-meet favorite.
Boys 3A/4A Race
Individual preview
Vero Beach's Antario Berek has the top individual time in the 3A/4A field. His 16:19.29 ranks No. 18 in 4A and is more than 27 seconds faster than the next ranked entrant.
That next runner is Suncoast's Miguel Gutierrez Guzman, ranked No. 44 in 3A with a 16:47.22 best. The rankings make Berek the favorite and Gutierrez Guzman the most identifiable challenger, but they also reveal how open the race is behind them: no other athlete from a listed 3A/4A entrant appears in the Top 50 rankings. That absence should not be mistaken for a lack of talent. It means this race has more room than the others for a breakthrough performance.
Team preview
This is the hardest boys team race to call. None of the 29 teams assigned to the 3A/4A race are in the statewide Top 100.
Vero Beach and Suncoast begin with a potential advantage because Berek and Gutierrez Guzman can provide low scores. After that, the middle of each lineup should decide the title rather than one front-runner. In a field without an established ranked team, the program that keeps its second-through-fifth scorers closest together will likely win.
That uncertainty is the central storyline of the 3A/4A race. Unlike the ROC, where Doral has the strongest documented profile, or the 1A/2A race, where Southwest Florida Christian owns the clearest depth advantage, this team championship is genuinely available to the squad that delivers the best complete race on the day.
Girls Meet Preview: 44th Annual Spanish River XC Invitational
The girls' races at the 44th Annual Spanish River XC Invitational present three distinct competitive pictures. The Race of Champions features the most ranked individuals and teams, with several South Florida XC powers that should be in the mix for the team title. The 1A/2A race pairs a near-even individual matchup with a team race that is shaped by the dpth of the teams. The 3A/4A race belongs to Winter Park on paper, but its XC and the gaps within its lineup leave room for an upset.
Girls Race of Champions
Individual preview
Doral Academy's Nicole Lewis enters as the top seed in the ROC. Her 18:42.99 season best ranks No. 22 in Florida and No. 7 in 4A. St. Thomas Aquinas' Elise Brown is her challenger at 18:50.00, good for No. 27 statewide and No. 9 in 4A. Seven seconds separate their best times of the season, giving Lewis the edge.
The second chase group is nearly inseparable. St. Thomas Aquinas' Kendall Parrott has run 19:16.00, Carrollton's Daniela Hernandez has a season best of 19:16.68, and Doral's Madison Chin has run 19:19.43. Hernandez is the No. 3 runner in 2A, while Parrott and Chin rank Nos. 16 and 20 in 4A.
Lourdes adds another strong team with Sofia Jimenez at 19:21.00, Alessandra Perez at 19:30.75, and Marisa Mantecon at 19:32.24. Carrollton's Gabriella Socarras has also run 19:25.33, while Holy Trinity's Taylor Geraghty enters with a 19:42.66 best and a No. 9 ranking in 1A.
Lewis is the individual favorite, but Brown is close enough to make the front of the race competitive through the first mile. Behind them, there is a narrow gap between Parrott, Hernandez, Chin, Jimenez, and Socarras that should amke the early part of the race interesting ad the final 400m a challenge.
Team preview
Carrollton enters as the highest-ranked team in the ROC field at No. 5 statewide. Its five scorers average 19:46.72 this season and are separated by only 54.29 seconds. Hernandez and Socarras provide two strong low scorers, while Eva Martinez-Lejarza, Lauren Martinez-Lejarza and Paola De La Iglesia give Carrollton a balanced middle.
Lourdes and Doral Academy lead the next tier at Nos. 9 and 10 statewide. Lourdes has an excellent top three in Jimenez, Perez, and Mantecon, all between 19:21 and 19:32, but its overall gap grows at the fourth and fifth positions. Doral has the best individual in Lewis and another front-end scorer in Chin, yet its 2:43.55 spread is similar to Lourde. The team that has their No. 4 and 5 runners step up will have the best chance of challenging Carrollton.
St. Thomas Aquinas is No. 15 statewide and has two of the race's top individual entrants in Brown and Parrott. Its scoring also depends on closing the distance from front to back in their lineup. Holy Trinity, ranked No. 21, Cardinal Newman at No. 24, and host Spanish River at No. 26 give the ROC some additional depth. Spanish River's Adriana Perrette and Brooke Thunberg form a solid front, while Holy Trinity places four runners inside the 1A Top 40.
Carrollton's balance makes it the team to beat. Lourdes, Doral and St. Thomas Aquinas have the low scorers to apply pressure, but each will need a complete five-runner performance to overcome Carrollton's tighter pack.
Girls 1A/2A Race
Individual preview
Cardinal Gibbons' Claire Chanon is the top seed in the 1A/2A field at 19:27.60, but Westminster Academy's Noelle Richardson is only 3.23 seconds behind her at 19:30.83. Both rank No. 7 in their respective classes, making for an interesting head-to-head matchup.
Chanon's teammate Giuliana Serra is another title threat. Her 19:34.77 best ranks No. 9 in 2A and puts her within seven seconds of Chanon. That gives Cardinal Gibbons two athletes who can work together near the front.
South Florida HEAT's Grace Dorn is the next-fastest seed at 19:59.26, followed by Southwest Florida Christian's Ayla Tobias at 20:07.10. Ransom Everglades' Julianna Hart has run 20:21.76, Calvary Christian's Harper Thomerson has run 20:26.24, and Southwest Florida Christian's Jayden Wilkins has run 20:36.55.
Chanon has the slightest numerical advantage, but the small gaps among Chanon, Richardson and Serra make this a genuine three-runner race.
Team preview
Ransom Everglades is the highest-ranked team in the 1A/2A race at No. 30 statewide. Its projected 1-5 average is 21:17.32, led by Hart and Gillian Carvalho. Ransom does not have the same front-end speed as Cardinal Gibbons, but its scoring five is evenly distributed, giving it the strongest full-team profile.
Cardinal Gibbons is No. 57 statewide and possesses the best one-two combination in Chanon and Serra. The challenge comes behind them: the composite list shows a gap of almost three minutes from Serra to the third scorer and a 3:40.44 spread from first to fifth. If the third-through-fifth runners can close that gap, Cardinal Gibbons may turn two very low scores into a team victory.
Calvary Christian is No. 60 statewide with a 21:48.27 average, while Southwest Florida Christian is No. 71 at 21:53.92. Calvary's Thomerson is the strongest lead runner; Southwest Florida Christian counters with two runners under 20:37 in Tobias and Wilkins.
On paper, Ransom Everglades has the team edge with Cardinal Gibbons and Westminster Academy challenging.
Girls 3A/4A Race
Individual preview
Winter Park teammates Bella Sacks and Kate Ryan are the only two with Top 50 marks in 3A/4A. Sacks has run 19:33.10 and ranks No. 27 in 4A; Ryan is just 4.78 seconds behind at 19:37.88 and ranks No. 31.
Those marks make Sacks and Ryan the top seeds and the clear favorites, but their closeness makes the order hard to predict. Working together could help them separate from the field early, after which the race may become a head-to-head test over the final mile.
No other athlete from a listed 3A/4A entrant appears in the 3A or 4A Top 50. The podium is unusually open, creating an opportunity for a breakthrough performance.
Team preview
Winter Park is the only team in the 3A/4A race that is in the statewide Top 100, entering at No. 40. Sacks and Ryan give the team two probable low scores, and Sofia Siddiqi adds a potential third of 21:13.51.
The favorite has a weakness, however. Winter Park's five-runner average is 21:11.43, but its first-to-fifth spread is 3:39.95. That means the fourth and fifth positions will determine whether the front-running advantage leads to a team victory.
