One of Florida's next distance stars may be 7th-Grader Colette Heffernan. The class of 2032 Landrum Middle School girl remains undefeated this cross-country season.
The young lady didn't just step onto the Florida middle school distance scene-she burst onto it. The standout first turned heads last fall during the 2025 cross-country season, claiming third place in the Public School race at the FLYRA MS State Cross Country Championships, crossing the line in 10:46.40.
Her breakout cross country performance capped off an eye-opening, sixth-grade track campaign as well. In the spring as a sixth-grader at the FLYRA Middle School State Track and Field Championships, she captured third place in the 3000m with a time of 10:15.41.
Now in her seventh-grade season, Heffernan has found another gear. She remains undefeated this fall and currently ranks No. 1 among middle school girls in the 3000m after clocking a 10:17.78 victory at the Florida Horse Park Middle School race. Her dominant streak also includes notable wins at the Cecil Field Summer Classic (8:51.00 over 2400m) and the Bale N Trail (10:22.90).
With momentum and a proven ability to perform on some of the state's biggest middle school stages, Colette Heffernan is a name to remember this season and well beyond. She is undoubtedly one of Florida's brightest young FUTURE STARS.
