One of the state's best runners ever Jenny Simpson is up for the prestigious 2011 Jesse Owens Award presented by Nike. Simpson became the first American woman to win the World Championship in the 1500 meters since Mary Slaney in 1983. She ran the third fastest 1500 time in 2011 (4:03.54) and was the U.S. Indoor Champion in both the mile and 3000 meters.
Simpson is one of eight women up for the award named after the legendary runner . Winners are selected by a combination of media votes (90%) and online fan balloting (10%). The award ceremony will be on December 3rd and run in conjunction with USATF's annual meeting this year in St. Louis, Missouri.
