West Orange Standout Jumps At Chance To Be Seminole

Der'Renae Freeman always loved the Gators growing up. Her high school colors at West Orange were blue and orange. So it came as somewhat of a surprise to those around her when the standout chose to join the Florida State track and field program.  Freeman says it was her relationship with Coach Ken Harnden that sealed the deal.

"I chose FSU over UF, UCF, and LSU. I wanted to stay in state and I liked Coach Harnden's resume  with sprinters and jumpers. He worked with Ngoni Makusha this past year and he won the Bowerman. Seeing all that inspires me. I met Makusha on my visit and had the chance to talk with such an amazing guy. He told me that hard work pays off."

Freeman won the 4A State Championship in the long jump when she unleashed a mark of 20-0.75. The jump was the top in the state of Florida for 2010 and only one of a handful nationwide to surpass 20 feet.  She likes the fact that Harnden also believes in her sprinting abilities as well.

"They plan to use me in the long jump, 100, 200, and relays. I'm looking forward to being a part of Florida State's tradition.  My goal is to help the team win a conference championship and compete on a national stage."

Now that she has taken care of her college selection she can focus on her senior season.  She says she has been getting stronger in the weight room and is rearing to set some new personal bests and break some state records.

"I definitely want to get under 12 seconds in the 100 and under 24 in the 200. In the long jump I definitely want to jump 20 feet high to 21. I also want to win another state title. That is the plan and to try and better the state record. Anything is possible with God."
