Injury Update: Marvin Bracy

Boone speedster Marvin Bracy crossed the line at the 4A State Finals with another gold medal in the 100 meter dash. It was the grimmace on his face afteward that had the everyone wondering what had happened. The senior had injured his left hamstring and opted out of running the 200. Trainer Ricky Argro tells us more about what happened andn how it will effect Bracy's future plans.

When did you know something was wrong?

I knew something was wrong when Marvin hit around the 60 meter mark. We had our race plan set and at 60 I could tell his running gait was different and he wasn't turning over like I'm use to. Then he let up totally the last ten meters grabbing his hamstring so immediately I was worried. Watching him walk around I could tell it was pretty serious. So after he walked to the team tent I ran a few preliminary tests I remembered seeing in school with hamstrings and we made the call it wasn't worth him going back out.

He hurt his right hamstring earlier in the year and now his left. Do you think the previous injury had an effect on this one?

Initially is was the other hamstring and I think we focused so much on the recovery of that leg I didn't do enough for the other leg. He overcompensated in training using the left more as to not re-irritate the right one and so with that, the conditions Saturday, the structure of the state championship format, and his ability to create such turnover it was a rough combination. I obviously didn't fully focus enough on the imbalances he was creating and didn't do a well enough job to work on the prevention of the imbalances. I blame myself as a coach for that it won't happen again.

You plan to take it slow for the next few weeks. What do you do as far as training?

The next few weeks are really about recovery. Hamstrings are so tough to gage because everyone responds differently. Marvin is a notorious fast healer when it comes to injuries. So we plan training around how his body is feeling. We may slowly work back into things next week and go from there. When he's able to sprint having a training partner such as Kermit will help cause they will push and feed off of each other. He has been rehabbing pretty well though so far.

What impact does this have on postseason events?

The original plan was to participate in the Golden South and that is still the tentative schedule, but if he's not 100 percent we will wait until the Dream 100 as a tune up for the trials. The Olympic Trials are the focal point so everything from now until then is putting Marvin in a position mentally and physically to compete with the greats.

Where is he at now both mentally and physically?

He right now is in a pretty good place mentally and physically. He's upset to be hurt because Marvin hates to not be able to do anything but his support system is awesome a lot of people care about Marvin so his spirits are good. Marvin focuses great when he's angry so I'm happy going into summer we should see a hungrier more determined Marvin Bracy. I look forward to the challenge of getting him back to form and better than before.
