Salute To Seniors: Matthew Basin - Wiregrass Ranch

What was your most memorable race?

Getting first at the Whispering Pines invitational and PR’d at the Land O Lakes Gator Invitational with a time of 17:48.

What would you consider your biggest competition?

PR in the mile and 5k

Out of all of your high school accomplishments which stands out the most?

Being picked Captain my senior year and Pr’d in the 5k and the mile and having the a great coaching staff to help me become a better runner and leader.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I would go back and really work on my upper body and do more core exercises and pay attention to the small things that could possible end your career.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

One of the biggest obstacles I had was getting patella tendonitis during the summer training. I was upset about the injury and was sideline for four days but was able to go to Warrior Running camp my senior year. When I got cleared to run again, I went right back at what I was doing before, training hard and never giving up. I was able to break the 18’s this year in my final season as a Bull and was Captain of the team my senior year as well.

What will you miss the most?

The races and meeting people from different schools and all my teammates.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?

Never give up in a race or in practice; giving up is a weakness and the only way to become a better and stronger runner is to push yourself through a hard work out or a long run. Make sure to drink plenty of water and not to eat any of the fatty food or drink soda. You won’t become a great runner by eating and drinking it and don’t drink energy drinks to make you run faster, you control how fast and what pace you can go at. Always listen to what your captains and coaches have to say, they will always lead you in the right direction and always be a guide in to helping you become a successful runner.

What are your college plans?

I am going to St. Leo University and be able to run cross country there and I will be joining Army ROTC as well and my major will be in Criminal Justice.
