Scouting Report: St. Thomas Aquinas Girls

St. Thomas Aquinas finished their 2011 cross country campaign with a third place finish at the 4A Cross Country Finals. The squad was just four points outside of the top spot finishing behind Plant and Ferguson. Coach Trish Butler loses her number two, four, six, and seven runners from a year ago, but has a strong core in sophomores Megan Schloss who finished seventh as a freshman and Brianna Rischar.

It will be interesting to see how those two step up with the loss of senior Alex Payne who finished 8th at the Cross Country Finals behind Schloss last year. Another factor will be captain Christina Kalis. Kalis finished fourth in the 800m with a time of 2:15.72 at the 4A State Championship after battling back from an injury sustained during last cross country season. Schloss, Rischar, and Kalis have clocked times ranging from 5:15 to 5:23 for 1600 meters, and Schloss and Rischar have both ran under 11:40 for 3200 meters. The team averaged a 19:14.33 last cross country season at state and will rely primarily on those three to go along with a group of incoming freshman to lower that mark.
