Scouting Report: Bolles Girls

Bolles girls cross country team finished last year with runner-up medals. At least for a little while that is. After a chip mishap with an American Heritage runner caused them to go from second to fifth, Bolles jumped up from third to second. The Bulldogs ended up giving their medals to the rightful team in which can only be described as a very emotional exchange. This year the team loses only two girls from their top fourteen, Rachel Rice who is now at East Carolina University and Micayla Costa. Leading the way for Bolles 2012 team is junior Lily Arnold and freshman transfer Mackenzie Wilson.

Arnold finished 12th at least year's Cross Country Finals in a time of 19:46.49. She has a season best of 19:43.20. Mackenzie Wilson, who has joined the Bulldogs for her freshman year after leaving Episcopal, was three spots behind Arnold in 15th at the state meet. Wilson, gives the program another youngster to build up for the future, but one that has a lot of experience for her age. As a seventh grader she was 11th at the state meet. She was also second and fourth in the 3200 meters during the outdoor campaign in 2011 and 2012. Ashley De Hechavarria will lock up the number three spot. The sophomore finished 31st at the state meet and comes in with the third fastest returning time for 3200 meters 11:51.52. Freshman Suzanne Dannheim, eighth grader, Aoife O'Riordan round out the top five. Those three all have 1600 meter times under 5:37.

It's a strong group this year for Coach Tony Ryan. Arnold is the veteran of the group and is a strong leader. Wilson is a great addition who has experience, but still plenty of years ahead of her to grow and mature as a runner. Bolles has a strong chance to claim the runner-up spot legtiimately this year and give rival Bishop Kenny, returning champ Carrollton, and American Heritage a run for the top prize.

Coach Ryan Says...

"The girls team is looking fairly solid. We just returned from our annual mini-camp in Tallahassee where we spent three days and ran with the Maclay team while we were there. The girls had a lot of fun and managed to get a few good runs in during the trip. Our girls just run steady mileage over the summer, starting off really easy in June and building up slowly in July and August. Other than increasing the long run and going a bit faster on our Wednesday runs, we don’t do anything too fast or too difficult until we get to September. We usually just try to run well in September and don’t worry about racing well until mid-October through post-season. Our big aim is to always have a healthy and injury free team going to the starting line in the post-season."

"The varsity girls will race twice in September – at Katie Caples and at Great American. Then in October they will go to the FSU Invitational and to Bale-n-Trail (we may add one more meet depending on how we are looking). We really don’t focus on any one regular season meet; the girls just try to race as well as they can based on the training they have done up to that point."

"The goal for the Bolles girls every year is to make the podium at the state meet and they have managed to achieve that goal six times in the last eight years (even though last year was on a technicality and was not the way they ever want to get on the podium). Hopefully we will be in with a chance again this year, although we know that there are some very good 2A girls teams who feel the same way about their chances."
