Race Recap
It was a hot, humid Saturday morning out at Lake Mary High School for the 32nd Annual Mike Gibson Summertime Run. With the regular season starting next week, the meet was a good final preseason tune up and chance to see where teams are at.
The girls race featured a pack of about five runners throughout most of the race including Winter Park's Charlotte Stephems, a trio of Hagerty Huskies, and Leesburg's Allison Wilson. At the end of the race, coming out of the park and onto the Ram's track, only two emerged from that group, teammates Kerstin Sosa and Brenna Johnson. Sosa, the junior pulled away from Johnson to win in a time of 20:19.90. It was her second win at this meet after finishing first int he junior varsity race last year. Johnson fought off a late charge by Wilson to finish second. Hagerty's Tiffany Gargiulo was fourth. Huskies win the team title over Lake Mary 55-67.
On the boy's side, a great finish was also in store. Oviedo's Justin Schanze leading for most of the second half of the race followed closely by a group of three or four including Freedom junior Connor Ferrentino. Ferrentino a relative unknown in this field which included virtual meet favorite John Lindsey of Winter Park, proved he could hang with the group, when he emerged with Schanze for the fnial 350 meters. Schanze had about a 20 meter lead on Ferrentino, but the junior who also runs track, showed his speed at the end passing him for the win in 16:24.90. Schanze was second in 16:25.70. Lindsey and his Winter Park teammate, freshman Ben Roberts came in third and fourth respectively as the Wildcats took the team championship.
Oviedo's Victor Langhower won the mixed JV race overall. Lion teammate Isabel Wildgen was the first girl to cross the line.
