Who is the greatest Florida high school girls 400 meter runner ever?  Easy.  Sanya Richards.  But while that question is an easy one right now, give Ebony Eutsey one more year and it might not be that easy to answer. This is the second in our series of features and interviews with the legends of the past decade.  Our All-Decade team members.  Look for more interviews posted every day over the next month.

Despite a torrential downpour, Ebony Eutsey, a rising senior at Miami Southridge, easily won her heat of the 400 meter semis at the World Youth Championship in Bressanone, Italy on Thursday.  She will enter tomorrow's finals at as the top seed with a qualifying time of 53.99 and will be considered the favorite to win gold.   Reflecting on Wednesday's preliminary round, where she won heat 2 with a time of 54.97, Eutsey said "It was alright... I picked it up tonight at 100m to go because I could feel Sandrae (Farqhuharson of Jamaica) on my shoulder and then I cruised at the end."   As she looks forward to the finals, she believes she can run much much faster, saying "If somebody pushes me, I want to go 51."   Her current PR is 52.42 from the Miami Elite Invitational earlier this year.  That is second all-time for a Florida high schooler.  Olympic bronze medalist Sanya Richards holds the all-time record mark in Florida, hitting a 50.69 in 2002. Is one noted Floridan’s national record destined to be taken down by another Floridian?        “Youbetcha,” say flocks of Sunshine State track fans who’ve been fortunate enough to see Ebony Eutsey in full flight.          The sensational junior at Miami’s Southridge High School has been a state champion since her freshman year and heads to the Nike Outdoor Nationals in Greensboro, N.C. as both America’s fastest girls scholastic  400-meter runner (at 52.42) and a soon-to-be threat to Sanya Richards’s USA all-time girls best (50.69) notched for St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale in 2002.

 Personal musings about tonight's meet.

Blessed with electric talent and a radiant smile, Miami Southridge sprinter Ebony Eutsey has set her sights on the records of two iconic Florida high school stars. Given Eutsey’s accomplishments in two seasons, it seems more a question of when - not if - the junior will wipe away the Florida High School Athletic Association state meet records of Sanya Richards and Erica Whipple in the 400- and 200-meter dashes.

Ebony Eutsey and Lanie Whittaker sure made us proud last night at the Golden West Invitational in California. The two Miami girls went 1-2 in the Girls 400m, easily beating out the competition with times of 53.23 and 53.43. The times are personal bests for both girls and Ebony's time puts her as #1 fastest time in the nation this year. Lanie's time puts her at US #5 this year. Riley Egan of St. Thomas Aquinas also shined brightly, finishing in second place with a vault of 16-2.75. That is his sixth time of over 16 feet this year, but short of his PR and the state meet record of 16-7 that he set last month. Riley's teammate Cody Riggs had a fine showing in two events with a 38.32 (5th) in the 300H and a long jump of 23--5.75 (4th). Derrick Hopkins had an absolutely huge time of 10.25, which earned him 4th place on the night and the 2nd fastest time for a Floridian in the event this year. This one will have a star by it though because the wind was above the legal limit. That wind helped propel Georgian D'Angello Cherry to a 10.16! Freshman Dedric Dukes was the final Florida finisher with a fourth place time of 48.25 in the 400 meters. Soon-to-be football player Connor Revord was a DNF in the 2 Mile. Complete Results
