4A Team Rankings: Wildcat Sweep Would Be Twice As Nice Todd Grasley Aug 22, 2014

The ladies of St. Thomas Aquinas have won the last two 4A Cross Country Finals. The Raiders boast defending champion Alexa Cruz and two other top five returners in Margaret Schloss and Brianna Rischar. Although, they sit at number one on our list, I am going to pull a not so fast! Winter Park is seeded eighth, but the Wildcats have Michigan transfer Elizabeth Jenkins who had a great track season, as well as the state's top incoming freshman in Rafaella Gibbons. The Wildcats won the championship in 2009 and were runner-up last year. A podium finish is a definite, but Coach Kristin McWilliams knows this group is special and second place won't cut it. On the boy's side, they have the same mentality of winning it all. It's a very deep group, much like the girls, that in addition to a great distance base, have great track speed as well.

3A Team Rankings: Chiles' Boys Seek 4th State Title, Will Have To End Belen Dynasty Todd Grasley Aug 22, 2014

Sarasota appears to have a large lead on Seabreeze with a strong top two of Angelina Grebe and Sage Lyons, but a win for the Sailors would mean knocking off powerhouse Estero. Although they are seeded 11th and Coach Sommer says it's not the best year, I've learned to never count out the Wildcats. There is a reason they have won four consecutive state titles! On the boy's side, Belen Jesuit has won seven of the last eight cross country crowns, but their might be a new sherrif in town. After finishing second behind Belen in 2013, the Timberwolves are hoping they can add their fourth championship since 2003.

2A Team Rankings: Bolles Vs. Pine Crest Setting Up To Be Slugfest Todd Grasley Aug 21, 2014

Seven points is what our rankings says will be the difference between Bolles and Pine Crest come November. The 2A defending champion Lady  Bulldogs have six girls in the top twenty, while Pine Crest has five. However, they boast the two time state champion in Julia Montgomery. Every point matters in this one! The boys race looked like a lock for Trinity Prep who made the jump to 2A last year and claimed their first title in that classification. However, we recently found out Tristan Rhodes has transferred making the chase for the crown a lot closer with McKeel Academy!  Check out the top five girls and boys teams in 2A and a link to their complete rankings.

1A Team Rankings: Oak Hall Girls, Holy Trinity Boys Look Strong Heading Into Season Todd Grasley Aug 20, 2014

We kick off our team rankings in 1A, the state's smallest classification. On the girl's side Oak Hall and Holy Trinity have gone head to head the past four years. In 2010, the Tigers and Eaglest went 1-2. In 2011, Oak Hall edged out Holy Trinity for the second podium spot. 2012 saw Oak Hall once again win, this time by 15 points, to hoist the 1A title. Last year, the opposite happened as Holy Trinity won by 14 points. Who will take round five? Oak Hall leads our composite rankings and look to be a slight favorite after the Tigers lost 3x state champ Julie Wollrath. The good news for Coach Butler is that his boys are a clear favorite. Can they go back to back and win their eighth title in school history? Check out the top five girls and boys teams in 1A and a link to their complete rankings.

Top XC Returners: 4A Girls - Cruz Control Todd Grasley Aug 12, 2014

Alexa Cruz looked like she had turned on the "Cruz control" at the 2013 Cross Country Finals. The St. Thomas Aquinas standout and runner-up the previous fall, ran away from the field to win the championship in 18:02.26, the fastest time of any returner. Cruz had a very successful outdoor track and field season winning the 3200m state championship and posting season bests of 5:07.03 (1600m) and 10:43.79 (3200m at Texas Relays).  She headlines the 4A leaderboard. Standing in her way will be Emily Headley. The Olympia senior was second as a freshman, fourth as a sophomore, and third as a junior. The only place she hasn't finished is first. Is this her year?

Top XC Returners: 4A Boys - Diaz, Zentmeyer Part Two Or Can Coral Reefsters Crash Party? Todd Grasley Aug 11, 2014

Nick Diaz and James Zentmeyer went down to the wire at last year's 4A Cross Country Finals. Diaz won by hundredths of a second in 15:22.90 and went onto place ninth at the Nike Southeast regional to advance to Nike Nationals in Portland where he was79th. During the 2014 track season he posted a personal best time of 4:16.11  for 1600m earning him a silver medal at the state meet. Zentmeyer focused primarily on the 3200m where he was fifth at state.

Top XC Returners: 3A Girls - Rudman's Year After Two Top Ten Finishes Todd Grasley Aug 09, 2014

3A was arguably the most difficult classification for girls last cross country season. Five of the top six girls graduated making the fight for the top spot a tad easier. That lone returner is Fort Walton Beach junior Emma Rudman who was tenth as a freshman and sixth in 2013. Rudman is coming off a fantastic track season winning the 3A state championship in the 3200 (10:55.52) and finishing as the state runner-up in the 1600m (4:53.46). If it comes down to a kick, advantage Rudman.

Top XC Returners: 3A Boys - Khosla King Of The Castle Todd Grasley Aug 08, 2014

All roads or trails in the case of cross country lead to Apalachee Regional Park in November when the best of the best contend for a state title. For posted one of the top distance runners in the country Sukhi Khosla (pictured above) it's a course he is very familiar with. The Leon High School senior posted a course record 14:59.45 at the FSU Invitational/Pre-State and went onto win the state meet a month later in 15:08.61.

Top XC Returners: 2A Girls - Wilson and Montgomery Battle Continues Ryan Raposo Aug 07, 2014

The battle for the 2A Girls Cross Country State Title has seen some similar faces the last couple of years, and this year looks to be no different. Once again two top girls representing your two top teams, Mackenzie Wilson of Bolles and Julia Montgomery of Pine Crest, look to have another epic XC season after stellar year for both girls.

Top XC Returners: 2A Boys - Is Correa Next In Line Of Ransom Champions? Todd Grasley Aug 06, 2014

Five of the top six boys from the 2013 2A Cross Country Finals graduated leaving several guys looking for the championship. Gabriel Correa of Ransom Everglades was fifth last year and is the top returner with a time of 16:00.82. If Correa can win it all, he will join Bert Irigoyen (2011 and 2012) as well as Billy Convey (1980,1981,1982) in the line of Raider's champions.  Joel Lacy and Urias Velasquez have run personal bests a hair off Correa's best. All three can go under 16 minutes.

Top XC Returners: 1A Girls - Wollrath's Jump To 3A Paves Way For Candiano & Others Todd Grasley Aug 05, 2014

Julie Wollrath has owned the 1A Cross Country Finals the past three years. However, 2014 will be different. With Wollrath transferring from 1A power Holy Trinity to Melbourne High School for her senior season, the gold medal will be worn around someone elses neck. Sarah Candiano was seventh last year and has the fastest time of all returners, but will be challenged by Calvary Christian's Hannah Brookover (8th last year), and Emily Chapman of Brevard HEAT who was sixth in 2013. Also, gone from the contenders is Denae Chapman who moved to Texas this summer. Check out the top 20 girls returners in 1A as well as a link to the complete list!

Top XC Returners: 1A Boys - Martins Looks To Repeat As Champion Todd Grasley Aug 04, 2014

2013 Country Finals champion Franco Martins returns for his senior season. Martins posted a 15:44.23 last year at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee to win the first of three state titles he would capture during his junior year (1600,3200 in track. Runner-up Andrew Cacciatore of Holy Trinity and sophomore teammate Trevor Kattenberg also return and should be contenders as well. Those three runners are the only ones who have broken the sixteen minute barrier. See the top 20 boys returners in 1A and  the complete list as well!

XC Raw Data: Boys Top Returning Teams Based On Track Times Ryan Raposo Aug 02, 2014

As we transition into the 2014-15 school year and shift from track & field back to cross country, it's fun to utilize the flrunners database to see just what teams dominated distance races on the track and what happens if you scored those events as a cross country meet. This is by far one of my favorite features. Here's what the database tells us...
