Solar Eclipse Doesn't Slow Down Sailors At Tri-County Championships John Stevenson Oct 24, 2014

Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte county schools tackled one of the tougher courses in the state at the Tri-County Championships. Normally in Florida if you want to run on an incline you are to find a bridge, but in Sarasota the Celery Fields contain a hill that has multiple steep, short climbs. Teams managed to get their run in as the earth was in the midst of creating a rare phenomena; a partial solar eclipse.

Tri-County Championships Virtual Meet Todd Grasley Oct 22, 2014

The Celery Fields in Sarasota were just that in the 1920's. In the 1990's the land became prime viewing grounds for photographing over 200 species of birds. Thursday the Celery Fields will be the host of the Tri-County Championships which features teams from Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte counties. On the girl's side Angelina Grebe leads the Sarasota girls while the boys field is headlined by Sarasota's Adam Bradtmueller who hopes to guide the Sailors to the sweep. Convey, Delay Don't Disappoint At Katie Caples Invite Zack Bias Sep 14, 2014

The Katie Caples Invitational is always one of the most competitive early season meets, and this year was no different. On a soft and slow course, runners from all over Florida, and parts of Georgia took to the course for a battle by the river. We saw some fast times, and some shocking upsets last night in Jacksonville.

Candiano, Rodriguez Win Wire To Wire At Estero DDD Invite John Stevenson Sep 7, 2014

The 2014 cross country season is upon us with much excitement and anticipation. The runners in southwest Florida were welcomed to one of the toughest courses in the state of Florida along with hot, humid conditions that is traditional for September. Estero’s coach, Jeff Sommer, prides himself on running a first class meet and making the Estero Community Park “one of hell of a course.” Runners are greeted with climbing a hill twice and the famous sand pit that they have to navigate twice as well.

Estero DDD Invitational Meet Preview/Virtual Meet Todd Grasley Sep 5, 2014

Forty-six teams and nearly 900 athletes will make their way to Estero Community Park for the Estero DDD Invitational. The course which has been used for district and regional meets in the past, contains short cut grass with a long hill and a sand pit. Newly added this year is a double bump on the backside of the hill.  One coach described this race as, "hell on Earth and the toughest course in the state." A strong contingent from southwest Florida is entered along with one of the top boy's teams in the state Belen Jesuit.

Scouting Reports: Sarasota Boys Todd Grasley Sep 3, 2014

Heading into the 2013 cross country season, the Sarasota High School boy's cross country team thought they might be in a rebuilding year after losing a large senior class. However, juniors Zack Summerall and sophomore Adam Bratmueller stepped up in the leadership role and helped the Sailors finish 8th at the 3A Cross Country Finals. Summerall is back for a final hurrah after finishing third and Bradtmueller hopes to improve his 17th place finish. Only six of the top eighteen in arguably the most competive class return, making Summerall and Bradtmueller top five locks and a potent 1-2 punch.

Scouting Reports Sarasota girls Todd Grasley Aug 26, 2014

Family. Coach John Stevenson says no matter how much talent his Sarasota girl's cross country team has, they have to believe in each other and support each other. That was the key take away from a 2013 season that saw the Sailors capture the 3A runner-up trophy and fall just 13 points shy of knocking off Estero. The only person that doesn't return from that squad is Emily Harding, who has graduated and is now running for the University of South Carolina.

Elite 10: Top Boys Teams Regardless Of Class Todd Grasley Aug 25, 2014

The 2014 Cross Country Finals are 82 days away! Though that may seem like a long time to some, the meet will be here before we know it. As we continue our rankings, we count down the top ten boys teams regardless of class. Did your team make the list? Find out!

3A Team Rankings: Chiles' Boys Seek 4th State Title, Will Have To End Belen Dynasty Todd Grasley Aug 22, 2014

Sarasota appears to have a large lead on Seabreeze with a strong top two of Angelina Grebe and Sage Lyons, but a win for the Sailors would mean knocking off powerhouse Estero. Although they are seeded 11th and Coach Sommer says it's not the best year, I've learned to never count out the Wildcats. There is a reason they have won four consecutive state titles! On the boy's side, Belen Jesuit has won seven of the last eight cross country crowns, but their might be a new sherrif in town. After finishing second behind Belen in 2013, the Timberwolves are hoping they can add their fourth championship since 2003.

Zack Summerall "shot out of cannon" on last lap Brandon Miles May 25, 2014

Zack Summerall, a junior out of Sarasota High School in Florida, was arguably the biggest surprise winner among the four featured qualifier races for the adidas Dream Mile and 100 at the Golden South Classic. On the last lap, Summerall switched gears to look like he was "shot out of a cannon" to run away from the strong field with a 4:14.81 victory and earn the Golden Ticket and auto invite to the Dream Mile on June 14th in New York City.

With the year coming to an end and another successful cross country season in the books it is never too early to take a look at the competition for next year! The rankings show a new wave of teams coming through. The Belen boys and Estero girls have ruled the roost for a long time and usually end up reloading rather than rebuilding. Coach Sommer let me hear about it for counting the girls out last year and I am not ready to make that mistake again. We will have to wait and see what happens!

Scouting Reports: Sarasota Boys Blake Riley Aug 5, 2013

The Sarasota High School boys cross country team is coming off of a fourth place team finish at last year's 3A Cross Country Finals.  The Sailors are going to have to work even harder in 2012 after graduating their number 2, 4, 6, and 7 runners. Leading the team is Zackery Summerall with a 5k time of 15:54. Zack placed 4th in the 3A Outdoor State Finals this year and also qualified for the 800m with a PR of 1:56. From ROTC roots, Sarasota' Lanning marches toward front of the 4A pack Bob Thomas Nov 21, 2008

Jon Lanning didn’t take the traditional route to the world of high school running, but in 2 ½ short years, the Sarasota High senior has worn a path littered with success. As a high school sophomore, Lanning distinguished himself during ROTC fitness competition team by regularly finishing first in area races comprised of running, sit-ups and other physical fitness tests. “When it ended in February (of 2007), I went out for track,” said Lanning. In what amounted to a one-year metamorphosis, Lanning blossomed into one of the state’s premier milers by the spring of ‘08, on the heels of a stunning seventh-place finish at the ‘07 4A state cross country championship in his first season of 5k competition.
