2003 FACA Boys Pre Season Rankings

1A Boys Teams

Rankings By: Doug Butler (Holy Trinity Academy) - coachdbutler@aol.com

1. Episcopal- Coach can whine all he wants about them not being ready, but with the addition of McLeod along with Jackson, Paulk, Berry, and Jorgensen you make them the team to beat.

2. Indian Rocks- Holden will be a tough cookie to beat and add the Rousonelous brothers with Mayleben and Kotchman and the could win as easily as McKinneys boys.

3. Trinity Prep- Roberts, Curley, Truchelut, and Rodriguez make them a top 4 that can run with any of the top 4. They find a fifth and they will take home hardware.

4. Holy Trinity- I am not sandbagging here. Joiner and Hale are running well, and Kelly is starting to come along but the rest are not where they need to be yet.

5. Upperrroom Christian- Graham will have to get his teammates cranking and they lose a couple to graduation. But, come November they will be where they need to be in Tampa.

6. Ransom Everglades- Word is it has been a good summer for the boys down south. Plasencia has nearly all last years team returning with him and look for them to be a top 5 in Tampa.

7. Dade Christian- They return nearly everyone and Guevera is a top 10 runner. Villalta, Gill and Hernandez give them a good front pack.

8. Frostproof- A new Coach here looking to make a mark and nearly all coming back off of good track seasons make this a scary team. Look for Alvarado and his posse to make their mark.

9. Oak Hall- Harris, Harris, and Matheny is not a law firm. What it is, is a very good front running threesome. They don't get any tougher then the Harris brothers and Al showed us what he can do on the track. Depth is their only shortfall.

10. Maclay- Ok, some of you are saying,"Butler is an idiot,(not that you never said that before), because Maclay is always in the top 2. Well fact is, loss of McMillen , Deak, Hollingworths and now Huntzinger make it a complete rebuild for the magician. But don't be surprised to see Coach Droze pull the rabbit out of his hat again: )

11. P.K.Yonge- Lane, Gevenhousen and Anderson (x2) will be returning and they are also coming off a great finish at last years state meet. Look for good things from this squad.

12. Jupiter Christian- They return Heisler, Imperial, and Wragg and will need to add some depth to move up and stay in the top 10. Never here much from them until October and then they show when it counts.

13. Shorecrest- Tylman, Wells, and Sher return and will also need a little help in the depth department to improve on last years state finish.

14. Benjamin- Myers, Cowle, and the Tartaglia's bring back solid years with them and look to move this bunch up the ladder this year.

15. Berean- Last years trip to state was a first of any sport in the schools history. Hard working Jarriel brothers return a young squad that will improve on last years state finish.

1A Boys Individuals

1. McLeod (Episcopal)- Will be the man to beat even with McKinneys coaching : )
2. Holden (IRC)- State 3200 champ will give Timbo a run for it.
3. Joiner (HTA) - They don't work any harder : )
4. Jarriel (Berean)- Will go out with a bang!
5. Myers (Benjamin)- 16:47 last year at state.
6. Elam (John Carroll) - 16:49 last year at state.
7. Roberts (Trinity Prep)- The move to 1A was not good news for us in Melb.
8. Curley (Trinity Prep)- Great track season makes him deadly
9. Guevara (Dade Chr)- Sub 17 last year at state
10: Hale (HTA)- great summer and coming out of Joiners shadow.
11. Matheny (Oak Hall)- Great track season for the soccer star
12. Plasencia (Ransom)- Solid summer makes him tough to beat
13. Hutchinson- Great race at state last year and look for him to repeat it
14. Jackson (Episcopal)- Fast team needs him to run well for the title
15. Wilbur (Westshore)- Who? Trust me, a summer of training with a couple of others on this list has Aaron in top form.

OTHERS:
T. Rousonelous (IRC)
M. Harris (Oak Hall)
Kelly (HTA)
Werly (Keswick)
Mayleben (IRC)
Roces (Episcopal)

2A Boys Teams

Rankings By: Everett Morris (Nease)- runner1000000@yahoo.com

1. Bishop Kenny- The Crusaders return 5 of the top seven and 7 of the top ten from last year. Replacing Ryder Leary will be hard but BK doesn't rebuild, it just reloads.

2. Miami Belen Jesuit- Returns 4 of the top five with Javier Cruz and Eduardo Arguello being good bets for the top five individually

3. Tampa Jesuit - Andy Biladeau is the fastest return runner from last year and should have a good shot at #1 this year. Although they return only two runners from their top five at state, depth should keep them near the top. That audible sigh that you hear from the Tampa area is Mike Boza's contentment at not doing the 2A rankings this year – LOL!

4. Gulliver Prep- With Bryan Sharkey and Larry Woerner near the front, Gulliver should have enough young talent to place well again this year.

5. Dunnellon - This team returns four of the top five from a region championship team last year.

6. Rockledge - returns the top five from last year's region second place team. They may slip by Dunnellon this year.

7. Lincoln Park- LPA only needs two more Hensleys to go with the three that they will have this year to move up.

8. Hernando - The loss of Zak Lukas in a tragic accident last winter keeps Coach Ernie Chatman's group from ranking higher. There have been rumors that they may have some fast new recruits.

9. Bishop Moore - returns 4 of the top five from last year and adds another member to what may be a tough region

10. Nease- returning two of the top five from last year means that the new troops will have to pick up the slack if Nease is to rank in the top ten.

2A Boys Individuals

1. Andy Biladeau (Jesuit)- should be a big favorite to win his first state title
2. Javier Cruz (Belen)- not too far behind Biladeau
3. Eduardo Arguello (Belen)- part of a potent one-two punch, Arguello may have designs on the number one spot also
4. Bryan Sharkey (Gulliver)- should be strongly in the mix in both the region and state races
5. Larry Woerner (Gulliver)- The second half of Gulliver's answer to Belen's front two. Things could be interesting in the South Florida Region.
6. Tony Costanza (BK)- a strong competitor who should lead the deciding pack at state
7. Brian Doyle (BK)- may not be content with second on BK's strong team
8. Jon Crouch (BK)- this gives BK three in the top ten with more to follow shortly
9. Richard Pereira (Bishop Moore)
10. Jeremy Criscione (Interlachen)

OTHERS:
Matt and Mike Hensley (LPA)
Will Sievers (Jesuit)
Glenn Buddecke (BK)
Chris Mullaney (BK)

3A Boys Teams

Rankings By: Matt Baum (flrunners.com)- matt@flrunners.com

1. Chiles- Chiles is returning 6 of their top 7 that competed in Tampa last fall. They lose their #1, Herbie Theile due to graduation, but with Alex Miletich up for the individual title and Stephen Smith most likely cracking the top 10 Chiles is the one to beat in 3A this season.

2. Satellite- Call me crazy, but the Scorpians finished a disappointing 8th last fall, so they have to redeem themselves this season, and they can do that with only losing one man from last years squad, but they need to get their hands on a solid 5th man.

3. Flagler Palm Coast- The Bulldogs take a big hurtin' with graduating seniors Vazquez, Anderson, and Alter, but with a great coach in Peter Hopfe and their excellent tradition, there's not a doubt in my mind that FPC will be near the top once again this season.

4. Wolfson- Wolfson will be returning 4 out of their top 5 that competed at State last season. The Wolfpack will be led by the two juniors, Justin Davis and James Coleman.

5. Mitchell- Mitchell is returning 3 of their top 5 from last season. They will be led by one of the states best, Jeff Masterson. Also, keep an eye on junior John Tuccio. He has been working harder than ever and if things click this fall, he will help his team out tremendously. If the Mustangs get a hold of a decent 4 and 5...watch out!

6. Port Charlotte- Port Charlotte will be led by rising senior, Bryan Gering. They lose no one from last years squad that finished 12th in Tampa. If this team stays healthy, they will be a threat to ALL teams in 3A.

7. Fort Walton Beach- Fort Walton returns 3 of their top 5 and will be led by Blake Hutchinson and Jason Haag. This is an excellent 1-2 punch, but they will need a few others to round out their scoring if the Vikings want to compete in November.

8. Pensacola Washington- The Wildcats lost just one of their 8th place squad from last season. Washington will be led by Eric Mayes, Mitchell Mason, and Brian Hoover.

9. Ocala Vanguard- Vanguard loses last years 3A champ, Steve Hassen and their #4. But the Knights will be returning the heart of their roster.

10. St. Thomas Aquinias- St. Thomas placed 17th last season, but should make some noise this fall. They return 4 of their top 5 that competed in Tampa last season.

2. Alex Miletich (Chiles)- Coming off of an amazing track season.
3. Kurt Able (Wesley Chapel)- Kurt only adds to the already stiff competition in 3A. Not to mention his 15:55 5k at USF.
4. Bryan Anderson (FPC)- Didn't hear too much about Bryan this spring, but I'm sure he'll be there once November rolls around.
5. Justin Davis (Wolfson)- Had a solid track season; 3,200- 9:49.
6. Blake Hutchinson (FWB)- Placed 12th at last years State Meet. 9:57 at the Challenge of Champions.
7. Scott Hans (Ridgeview)- Broke through during track season. Should be tough to beat this fall.
8. Johnny Roberts (East Ridge)- Placed 21st at last seasons State Meet. 9:50 last spring.
9. Lief Thomason (Satellite)- Had a solid cross country season last fall and came back with superb track season; 3,200- 9:52.
10. Sam Gibbons (Plant)- Didn't hear too much about Sam during track season. 17:06 at USF Twilight.
11. James Coleman (Wolfson)- Placed 16th in Tampa last fall.
12. John Tuccio (Mitchell)- Placed 32nd at last years State Finals. Had a great summer. 16:19 at USF Twilight.
13. Steven Bell (LOL)- 4:27 during track season. 16:13 at USF Twilight.
14. Karim Martin (Belleview)- Placed 25th last year at the State Meet. Ran 1:54 during the spring.
15. Jason Haag (FWB)- Placed 27th at last seasons State Meet (16:47)

4A Boys Teams

Rankings By: Mike Hill (Winter Park)- Mhill927@prodigy.net

1. Winter Park (1)- The Park boasts 4 of the top 15 returners from the state meet finish of last year. Coleman Hoover, Donny Anguish, Caleb Vogt, and Scott Lindsey form a formidable foursome, but it takes 5 to score and 7 to run. If WP has a weakness, and they do, their 5 – 7 must get to the job done. The opportunity to be the 2nd school in Florida (big class) history to win 3 in a row on the boys' side should keep them motivated.

2. Buchholz (5)- This may an unpopular choice for number 2, but this group of seniors has chosen to make the most of it and take a run at the defending champs. Coach Norris is ready to continue the tradition of excellence. Led by Patrick Troy look for Bobcats to give the Wildcats all they can handle.

South Plantation (2)- True group of gentlemen from down south return everything but the kitchen sink (Paul Cross). Excellent coaching, the endless possibilities of the young guns, and a thirst for gold, will be the driving force behind the Paladins this season. A double dose of Calabro and the development of the frosh Bonilla has to excite these guys. Look for yet another team ready and willing to go for the big one in November.

4. Boone (4)- Yet again the Braves should be a threat to almost any team out there. Dean Brown's senior year approaches and he has youth with him. Jones and Kindt will be a part of their top 5 along with a couple of very solid incoming 9th graders. Boone will be battle tested come post season after spending the year racing many of the best teams in 4A on a weekly basis.

5. Edgewater (5)- The graduation of Chris Cox is really the only hit the Eagles took last year, but their depth was not a friend a year ago. Solid advancements by Justice, and return of Richards will be pleasant improvements. However, a knee cap injury to #1 returner Horner may hold them back early on. Coach Benz however will once again have the boys ready when the time comes for sure.

6. Lyman (7 – 3A)- The Greyhounds return to the big class again this year armed with another possible state champ in Bryan Christian. With lots of athletes out and training, Lyman should have an immediate impact on the upper echelon on 4A. Tradition goes a long way in cross country and Lyman has that.

7. Colonial (9)- The Grenadiers come back with most of their 2002 squad intact. Unfortunately, the loose Barreras to an out of state move, and Andrew Charles to graduation. On the positive side, the middle school pipeline of quality runners is still open and Coach Plasencia continues to reap the benefits. Alvin Charles is a legit top 10 threat and they have been training.

Here's where I'm just not sure about much team wise, so I'm taking guesses…

8. Mandarin (11)- Mandarin returns a good core of runners, and has very good coaching in place. Look for this team to continue improving over time, the ingredients are there.

9. Martin County (3)- At this point these guys are here on reputation. Cook and Johnson leave huge shoes to fill, but Martin County is a solid program and they will continue to be one of the better ones around.

10. Riverview (Sarasota) (13)- Another team that is best of the rest. A decent returning group is what we're going on here. Led by young De Veau, this squad is on the bubble.

1. Coleman Hoover (Winter Park) #1 returner from last year's state meet, 15:58 5K PR, 9:36/4:27 in track, and a killer instinct
2. Bryan Christian (Lyman)- # 3 returner from 3A last year, 16:09 5K PR, 9:36 in track last season. Poetry in motion when he runs.
3. Drew Horner (Edgewater)- #4 returner from last year, 15:58 5K PR, 9:48/4:28. Knee injury makes this an end of the year position not an early one.
4. Patrick Troy (Buchholz)- #8 returner from 2002, 9:43 with 4:25 speed. Senior year has a lot of potential
5. Caleb Vogt (Winter Park)- #9 returner from last year while hampered by residual affects of a concussion. 9:43/16:18 5K PR. Has run well under 27 for 5 miles
6. Alvin Charles (Colonial)- Horrible state meet in '02, but 9:41 in track and a 16:19 (legit) 5K PR.
7. Ken Magee (Seminole)- 9:42 in track, 16:19 5K PR, solid runner.
8. Scott Lindsey (Winter Park)- #15 returner from state, but had an excellent track season with a 9:46 with 4:23 speed to back it up.
9. Brian Calabro (South Plantation)- # 2 returner from state, never broke 10 or 4:30 in track though. Could be a long distance type guy, has many training partners, one in his own home.
10. Donny Anguish (Winter Park)- #3 returner from state, sub par track season leaves much to be redeemed this cross season. Another runner with many quality training partners – a bonus.
11. Nathan Krah (Lakewood Ranch)- Solid newcomer to 4A. 9:44 in track puts him near the top.
