TALLAHASSEE, FL - Maclay School’s Stefanie Kurgatt signed a Track and Field scholarship with Georgetown University on Wednesday at 12:55 in the Webster Center. Based on 2012 times, Stefanie enters the 2013 season as Florida’s top-ranked returning prep girl in the 1600 meter and 3200 meter events, and the second ranked Florida prep in the 800 meters with all classes combined.
Kurgatt currently holds the Maclay School records in every running event from 800 meter to 5000 meter (cross-country), logging a personal best of 2:10.49 in the 800m, 4:49.62 in the 1600m, 10:39.08 in the 3200m, and 17:47.62 in the 5000m cross country where she was the runner-up at the 1A state championship as a sophomore. Her times in the 1600m and 3200m are ranked in the top 10 nationally. She is undefeated at the 1A state championship in 800 meter having won the event the last four years. Last year she anchored Maclay’s school record-setting 4x800 meter relay team (9:23.95), which finished runner at the 1A state championship. She also won the 1600 meter state title in 2012 just 45 minutes before setting her personal best and claiming the 800 meter state title.
The senior has been named to the All-Big Bend Track and Field team four times, and was named the 2010 Tallahassee Female Cross Country Runner of the Year by the Chenoweth Fund. She has also a four-time MVP of the Maclay Track and Field and Cross Country teams where she has been captain. Kurgatt is a member of the Anchor service club, the Spanish Honor Society, a volunteer with the Gulf Winds Track Club and writes a weekly blog for the www.flrunners.com which is affiliated with the national website https://www.milesplit.com.
Kurgatt plans to major in Human Sciences and become a physical therapist. “Georgetown is the best place for me academically and athletically,” said Kurgatt. “It is a wonderful place and I will have the best opportunities.” The Georgetown Hoyas women’s cross country team is among the national’s elite winning the 2011 NCAA Championship.
