Gone in 2013, will be the familiar cross country battles between Trinity Prep and rival Holy Trinity. The two teams have captured a majority of 1A state championships in the past seven years. After finishing a disappointing third in 2012, the Saints will move up a classification to 2A. Trinity Prep loses Daniel Salas, who was a key cog in the squad's championship run and fellow senior Gordon Pace, but as always Coach Vinal has a slew of depth. Sophomores Jesse Milson, who finished 17th at the 1A Cross Country Finals, and Chas Cook (22nd), will be the 1-2 punch at the front of the roster. They are joined by seniors Paul Reggentin and Sam Milson (Jesse's older brother). Fellow junior Tristan Rhodes also has state meet experience and rounds out the top five. For the first time in Vinal's 14 years of coaching he has five returners with personal bests under 17 minutes. It's a 1-5 he says is very close in times and one be he believes will put them in the mix for a 2A title. Others to watch include Ryan Hopkins who had a great track season and freshmen Preston Copenhaver and Trent Mandato who have had solid summer time trials and will be vying for a top seven spot.
Coach Vinal Says...
"Most of the team will have run over 500 miles by the end summer. The top guys will come in around 650-700 miles. We spent two weeks at the Brevard Distance Runners Camp in North Carolina, as is our custom. Our strength is our depth and a likely less than 30-second 1-5 spread. We want to win the state championship and be a top five team in Florida."
