2A Girls Rankings
By: Mike Becker, Ransom Everglades, mbecker@ransomeverglades.org
Team Rankings:
Commentary: This first ranking is in many ways a stab in the dark.  It is not  clear which top runners have transferred.  Nor is it clear  which programs inherited top freshmen.  However, It is clear that on paper,  Bolles is bringing the most back.  Ransom Everglades, Lemon Bay, Pine Crest and Bishop Kenny return top runners with great track seasons.  So look for those teams to battle it out and possibly present a challenge to Bolles.  I look forward to actually reviewing results soon, so that this ranking has more basis to it.  Also  sorry if I am missing any outstanding A or AAA team that just came over to AA. That will get fixed soon

  Team Name (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Bolles (1) Returning State Champions are not only loaded, but young.  They see, to be returning one of the top teams in Florida, regardless of classification
2A Pine Crest (2) Lost two seniors, but has great young depth
2B Lemon Bay (3) Returns most key runners, and coems off a great track season
2C Ransom Evereglades (4) Returns entire team and adds a groupd of talented freshmen
5. Bishop Kenny (5) Always competitive and has the advantage of racing Bolles multiple times; lost a little but quick to reload
6. Carrolton (6) Now a South Florida perennial powerhouse
7. Eastside (7)
8. Robinson (8)
9. Lake Highland Prep (9)
10. Immokalee (10)
11. West Florida Tech (NR)
12. Nature Coast (NR)
13. Berkeley Prep (NR)
14. Academy of Holy Names (NR)
15. Lots of Contenders (NR)
Individual Rankings:
Commentary: Montgomery is clearly the top returner.  AA is ripe with returning, talented runners from different parts of the state. Wilson from Bolles, Munoz from Immokalee were runner ups in track and xc, while Rogers has the best 1600 time in group by far.  It is a certainty that this list has omitted some worthy runners.  I look forward to compiling results next week, and to start to sort this tight pack out.  For now, I tried to include every returning runner who broke 20:00 last year ( according to FL Runners Data base). Also forgive spelling mistakes.  Just notify me and I will correct.  I appreciate input if you think I have it wrong by the way.

3A Girls Rankings
By: John Stevenson, Sarasota HS, john.stevenson@sarasotacountyschools.net
Team Rankings:
Commentary: It’s obvious that region 1 and 3 are well represented with talent. The state champion  will be coming from one of these regions. There is no clear front runner with Estero being the two time repeating champion, I give them the edge. A lot of questions will be answered in coming weeks with many teams searching for a reliable 4th or 5th runner to sew up their scoring team.

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1a. Estero, 3 (1) Tough to bet against a program like Estero. 2011 and 2012 champion, but who is going to step up in the 5th position? Who will step into the spikes of Kacy Smith and Katie Solis?
1b. Fort Walton Beach, 1 (2) Very solid top 5. They want that top spot in November. I made Fort Walton 1b ranking since they are returning many good runners and Estero’s question mark at the 5th position.
3. Creekside, 1 (4) Will compete for the top spot since spread between top 5 is close to 1:30. Had a tremendous track season. Multiple runners ran close to 11:45 in the 3200 meter and 5:35 or under for the 1600 during track. They will move up to the top spot if cross country times correlate to their track season. Could have placed them 1st, but need more XC data.
4. Gulf Coast, 1 (10) Lead by Barlow. Major issue is building the back half of the team to get their spread lower. Strong summer training and ready to start the season fast.
5. Fort Meyers, 3 (14) Lead by the #1 runner in 3A, Edwards. With Emily, they will always be in the hunt. Can their 4 and 5 make gains this year? If so, they should improve on their 11th place finish in 2012.
6. Niceville, 1 (NR) I think they're going to be the biggest surprise of the 2013 season. Their spread is well below 60 sec. Watch out top 3 finish if their top 2 make significant gains.
7. Lakewood Ranch, 3 (7) LWR lost their top 2 runners, but Coach Bratton always gets her team to compete, lead by senior Michelle Last.
8. Stanton Prep, 1 (NR) Solid top 6 with a spread of 1:15 between 1-5. If they can push each other to improve, they will be moving up in the ranks. 4 runners ran under 6:00 in the 1600 meter during track.
9. Merritt Island, 4 (8) The only team that is not from region 1 or 3 team to make the rankings. Always a solid program. Lost 2 seniors in their top 5. Very good 1600 and 3200 times during track.
10. Robinson, 3 (NR) Moving up a class from 2A. Their consistency will serve them well to move up in the rankings and compete with probably the most competitive class in Florida.
11. Sarasota, 3 (12) Biggest concern is their spread....too much time between 1 and 5. Can the incoming freshmen make a significant impact? Can they run with the top teams in big meets? Surprised a lot of teams in 2012.
12. Columbia, 1 (NR) Returning their top 6 runners from last year. They will be battling for a state spot in their tough region.
13. Ridgeview, 1 (11) Team is consistent. Will need to make gains in their back half of the team to compete. Lost one senior in their top 7.
14. Nease, 1 (9) Fantastic track season lead by Karen Xiang. Can they continue their success into cross country season? Their 3-5 will need to step up to qualify at states.
15. Bartram Trail, 1 (5) Sneaked in the top 15 because they have a little more depth than Chiles. 8th team in Region 1 in the top 15. Going to be tough to make it to Tallahassee.
Individual Rankings:
Commentary: I took into consideration 2012 PR, state meet finish, 2013 3200 m and 1600 m times. There will be a new state individual champion since the top 3 from last year's state meet graduated. Just as the battle for the state title will be close, I believe the individual title will come down to the last 400 meters. I give the top notch to Edwards based on her state title in the 1600 and her XC PR, but watch out for Barlow. After a few weeks, rankings will be clearer. The 5k times are the runner's best time in 2012.

Athlete Name, Grade – Team (Prev.)  Time, Comments:
1. Emily Edwards, 12, Ft. Meyers (NR) 17:43, By far the fastest PR with 17:43 at FL Runners, but couldn’t hold on to the lead pack at the state final. She is out for redemption and wants that state title.1600 meter state champion. Lead 3A with the fastest times in the 1600 and 3200. Already in top shape and ready for a strong senior season.
2. Caroline Barlow, 12, Gulf Coast (NR) 18:12; Had a great track season with a 5:05 PR in the 1600 m. Finished 4th and 3rd, respectively in the 1600 m and 3200 m in states. Ran very well down the stretch last cross country season finishing 4th in Tallahassee.
3. Rachel Kling, 11, Pace (NR) 18:29; Ran a PR in the 3200 during the Region 1 meet with a time of 11:18 finishing 3rd. Last season in cross country, Kling finished 6th overall at the state meet with a blistering 18:32.
4. Elizabeth Mulford, 11, Ocala Vanguard (NR) 18:41; Placed 2nd in Region 1 in the 3200 meter with a PR of 11:13. Had a fantastic XC season finishing at states with a time of 18:44 placing 11th overall
5. Emma Rudman, 10, Fort Walton (NR) 18:42; Emma continued her success in cross country by placing 6th at the state track meet in the 1600 and 3200. She burst on the scene last year as the fastest freshman in 3A with a PR of 18:42 and a 10th place finish at XC states.
6. Katie Slater, 12, Estero (NR) 18:26; Placed 7th at Region 3 meet in the 800. Placed 12th at the cross country state final. Huge PR at Foot Locker South Regional with a time of 18:26.
7. Adair Lyden, 10, Lake Nona (NR) 18:42; Coming from 2A, Adair placed 4th at the track state meet in the 3200 with a time of 11:26. She finished with a time of 19:09 in the 2A state cross country meet. PR 18:42 at FL Runners.
8. Bethany Jenkins, 12, Estero (NR) 18:48; Finished the 2013 track season with a season best 11:26 in the windy, raining conditions at the state track meet. She will be looking at getting back to her 2011 performances to help Estero to a top finish. Finished the cross country state meet in 18:48 placing 13th overall.
9. Angelina Grebe, 11, Sarasota  (NR) 18:57; Angelina really turned it up in the postseason during the 2012 cross country season finishing 4th in Region 2 and 16th overall at the state meet with a time of 19:01. She placed 5th in the 3200 in the Region 3 meet with a PR of 11:38.
10. Hannah Giangaspro, 12, Bartram Trail (NR) 19:12; Hannah had a great track season with big PR’s in the 1600 with 5:17 and 11:24 in the 3200. She finished the 2012 cross country season with placing 17th at the state meet with a time of 19:12. With that track season, she will be on pace breaking 19.
11. Sarah Hammond, 11, Merritt Island (NR) 18:59; Sarah placed 5th in the 2A Region 3 1600 meter with her PR time of 5:27. She placed 18th in the state XC final meet with a time of 19:13. A very consistent runner last year.
12. Karen Xiang, 12, Nease (NR) 19:15; Karen dropped 35 seconds off her 1600 time during the 2013 track season finishing with a PR of 5:10 and qualified for the state final finishing with a medal in 8th place. Ran very well when it mattered by running a 19:19 at the state cross country meet finishing 22nd. She later PRed at Foot Locker South with a time of 19:15.
13. Breeana Salcedo, 10, Cypress Lake (NR) 19:17; Breeana just missed qualifying for states in the 1600 with a PR of 5:17 and placing 5th in the competitive region 3 meet. Had a solid season in the 800 as well. She kept on getting faster last year’s cross country season with a PR at Foot Locker South with a time of 19:17. Finished 21st at the state meet in Tallahassee.
14. Daley Cline, 10, Estero (NR) 19:12; Definitely a talent to watch. Dropped over 30 seconds off her 1600 time with a personal best 5:22 at the Florida Relays. Finished the 2012 cross country season strong with a PR at Foot Locker South with 19:12. The tradition continues at Estero.
15. Alyssa Rodale, 12, Nease (NR) 19:16; Made some gains during track with PR’s in the 3200 (11:29) and 1600 (5:26). Had a very consistent 2012 cross country season with running in the mid to low 20’s. Really shined during the region 1 meet with a PR of 19:16. Finished 28th in the state meet with a time of 19:25.
16. Ashton McMurray, 12, Chiles (NR) 19:18; Ran a PR in the Region 1 meet in the 1600 with a time of 5:20. Hoping to lead Chiles back to the state meet. Ashton ran consistent near the end of cross country season in the mid to low 19’s.
17. Jessica Fletcher, 12, Ridgeview (NR) 19:10; Solid leader for Ridgeview with running in the 19’s last year and placing 9th in the region 1 meet to help qualify Ridgeview to the state meet. Jessica ran a solid 19:32 at the state meet finishing 30th. Maybe a little disappointed in her track season by not PRing in the 1600.
18. Megan Slater, 11, Estero (NR) 19:35; Focuses on the 800 meter in track but ran a PR of 5:22 at the FSU Relays. Her huge PR at the cross country state meet last year helped Estero with defending their title with a time of 19:35.
19. Autumn White, 11, Fort Walton (NR) 19:21; An 800 and 400 runner that is looking to help reduce pressure off Emma. Autumn will need to be more consistent this year to help Fort Walton bring home the title. Ran a season best 19:21 in 2012 at the region 1 meet and placed 34th in the state meet.
20. Emma Tucker, 10, Columbia (NR) 19:30; A 800 runner for track ran a season best of 2:21. Emma just missed qualifying for cross country states in the the competitive region 1. Ran a PR of 19:30 at the regional meet. Had a strong back half of her XC season.
21. Sara Steele, 12, Choctawhatchee (NR) 19:22; Ran a season best last year in cross country in the Region 1 meet with 19:22. No major gains in the 3200 or 1600 during track.
22. Jessica Van Cleave, 12, Creekside (NR) 19:28; A little slight edge at begin ranked at 22 in front 23-25 because of her performance at Foot Locker South with a time of 19:28...colder weather might have helped, but still a solid 1600 time during track (5:27).
23. Emily Kerns, 11, Mitchell (NR) 19:34; Disappointing ending to last year’s cross country season by running 21:01 (1:30 off her PR). Came back strong with a good track season with running a 2:22 800 meter and 5:17 for the 1600 meter. Placed 10th in the state track meet in the 1600.
24. Bethany Hardcastle, 11, South Fork (NR) 19:43; Bethany’s track season moved her up the ranks with PR at the 1600 with a time of 5:25. Finished the cross country season strong with breaking 20 in the region and state meets.
25. Nina Li, 12, Merritt Island (NR) 19:45; Cross country PR isn’t stellar for top 25 but her track season helped her ranking with PR’s in both the 800 (2:31) and 1600 (5:28).

  Girls to watch:
Danielle De Gree, 12, Gulf Coast   She will be up soon, but disappointing 20:02 at the state meet and didn’t run distracts for track
Audrey Carpenter, 11, Ocala Vanguard   Almost made top 25 with her 5:29 1600, but didn’t break 12 for the 3200.
Alyssa Weber, 11, Citrus   Track season dropped her a little in the rankings
Jillian Richter, 11, Ft Meyers   Nice PR for cross country, but lacked gains in track
Michelle Last, 12, Lakewood Ranch    Little off her PR at XC states, but ran 5:31 in the 1600 in track
Samantha Davis, 12, Gulf Coast   Solid track season
Kaitlin Rocker, 10, Creekside    Wonderful track season, we will see her soon in the top 25
Colleen Openshaw, 11, Creekside   Same as her teammate Kaitlin

4A Girls Rankings
By: Ryan Raposo, John A. Ferguson HS, ryanraposo@gmail.com
Team Rankings:
Commentary: In piecing together these pre-season rankings I primarily looked at the same things I look at every year, although I haven't received much insider information this season, which includes: 1) last year's state results [minus seniors], 2) returning team's depth, 3) track & field prowess, and 4) other miscellaneous things such as transfers, athletes returning from injury, or incoming freshmen. So as we get started for competitions next week, don't pay too much attention to the rankings, because it'll all change before you know it!

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. St. Thomas Aquinas, 4 (1) The Raiders are on fire as we head into the 2013 season after last year's domination of the cross country state championship, followed up by a strong track & field season, including a 4x800m state championship. Also keep in mind that they didn't graduate a single girl from their varsity last year. So without a doubt, St. Thomas is in the driver's seat for another championship this year.
2. John A. Ferguson, 4 (5) The Falcons are coming off a slump 2012 cross country season, as compared to 2011, but after only graduating one athlete from their varsity squad last year they're poised to make their way back to the podium. Ferguson had their own successful track & field campaign this year, including a 4x800m state runner-up, and as of now are in no man's land sitting in the 2nd position, just a little too far behind St. Thomas.
3. Lourdes Academy, 4 (8) After what would be considered a disappointing season for Lourdes last year due to multiple injuries, the Bobcats are back in gear and ready for 2013. This year they appear to have all of the pieces coming together, between strong senior leadership, dedicated and experienced underclassmen, and new young talent coming into the fold. Be on the look out for big things from this perennial powerhouse.
4. Lake Mary, 1 (10) Poised for a possible top five finish this year, the Lake Mary Rams appear to have the strength and depth to stay at the top and carry out big things in Region 1 this year. But the chase pack is closer than the top three ranked teams, so beware of who is coming up!
5. Plant, 2 (2) After graduating four of their top six from last year's State Runner-up team, the Panthers have so much depth that another top five finish appears to be in the mix for them. Once again they look to possibly be the favorite in Region 2, although they are not quite as strong as they have been in recent years.
6. Wharton, 2 (NR) Just because they didn't the state meet last year doesn't mean they can't crack the top ten, or even five, this year! These Wildcats have a strong four leading their squad, but need to close the gap on that fifth runner if they want to move even further up these rankings!
7. Mandarin, 1 (11) A couple of notches behind Lake Mary, don't be fooled in thinking that these Mustangs can't put together a tough campaign to be a Region 1 championship team, or that they don't have a shot at the top five. A good returning group with some depth, keep your eye on these girls!
8. Newsome, 2 (6) Another team in the mix for top five honors and a possible Region 2 championship, these Wolves need to keep working hard on trying to catch those teams slightly above them and tighten up their top pack in order to achieve those goals.
9. Winter Park, 1 (NR) On paper the Wildcats are the #9 team in the state, but if there is any sleeper squad, this is it. Coming off one of the strongest distance track team performances in the state (see the 1600m rankings), these Wildcats are poised to be the one team that might shock everyone by jumping five or six teams and possibly jump into the top three this year.
10. West Orange, 1 (NR) Another tight squad with upward potential, these West Orange Warriors fall right into the same mix as a few of the teams above and below them. They have a pretty good pack and aren't too far from working their way up the rankings ladder.
11. Coral Reef, 4 (13) The Barracudas are coming off their strongest state finish in school history after a big jump last season. Working with a tight spread, these girls have a shot at making the top ten for the first time.
12. Parc Vista, 3 (14) Right on Coral Reef's heels are the Parc Vista Cobras, your current top team in Region 3 after the new FHSAA classification realingments. A pretty good packed squad with lots of upward mobility, they too have a chance to catch a top ten spot.
13. Sickles, 2 (NR) These Gryphons, although currently ranked 13th, have one big advantage over many of the other squads vying for top ten honors and that's a strong 5-6-7 pack in the back half of their varsity. If those girls can work and move up together, expect big things!
14. Buchholz, 1 (NR) These Bobcats, although appearing to be sitting comfortably in a possible top 15 spot, are so tight with many other Region 1 teams, such as the two tired for 16th place on this list, that they'll need to work hard if they want to make it to the state meet this year.
T-15. Wiregrass Ranch, 2 (3A-6) The only 3A squad that falls onto this list after the reclassifications, these Bulls are going to have their work cut out for them this year in their new 4A home. Top 15 is a possibility, but not guaranteed with so many similar teams in the mix this season.
T-15. Sarasota Riverview, 2 (19) Also on the brink of a top 15 spot, the strength possessed by these girls is a sub 40 second spread for their 1-5, with less than 60 seconds for 1-6. I've always been a fan of pack teams, so if they can hold it and move up together, they might be a major surprise this season.
T-16. Lake Brantley, 1 (NR) One of the worst positions to be on this list, these Patriots (and the team right below) are fighting for that final Region 1 spot. There isn't much to say except the "Region of Death" claims many victims each year and you always hope to not be one of them.
T-16. Lyman, 1 (NR) As with Lake Brantley, these Greyhounds are trying to not suffer the fate of possibly not qualifying out of the hardest Region in the state. However, their advantage is having decent depth in the back half of their varsity squad.
17. Seminole, 2 (15) Closing out our Region 2 teams, the War Hawks should be a solid top 20 team, but top 15 currently looks out of reach because of the depth of the teams above them. Prove me wrong, girls!
18. Spanish River, 3 (12) The Silver Streak Sharks are leading the pack of Region 3 teams that are filling in the bottom tier of the rankings, and should also be a solid top 20 team after only graduating #1 from last year's state team.
19. Cypress Bay, 4 (18) New to Region 4, the Cypress Bay lightning appears to be the only new squad to be able to make it out of what is the most top heavy Region in the state. Led by an individual state contender, their extremely large spread will prevent them from much upward mobility.
20. Vero Beach, 3 (20) The Fighting Indians are starting off right where they finished last year ranked 20th. A good spread and some hard work might have them cracking into the teens this year something they were so close to last year.
21. Jupiter, 3 (NR) Led by a couple of very strong individuals, these Warriors should be able to make it to the state meet this year, but with a huge spread currently set-up from last year's performances put a top 20 spot just out of reach.
22. Dwyer, 3 (17) The Dwyer Panthers find themselves starting another season ranked in the bottom tier, but look to possibly impress me once again by moving up the rankings and securing a top twenty spot just like at last year's state meet.
23. Douglas, 3 (22) Although also listed in the bottom tier, these Eagles are the squad with the depth in the back half of their varsity that could really help move their squad into a possible top 20 position.
24. Miami Sunset, 4 (NR) These Knights missed the state meet last year, but find themselves once again in a position to work their way back to the big show. Keep working hard, girls!
  Bubble teams:
  Olympia, 1 (3)
  Boone, 1 (NR)
  Freedom, 2 (NR)
  Martin County, 3 (NR)
  Boca Raton, 3 (NR)

Individual Rankings:
Commentary: Just as with every year, the girls are ranked based on last year's Season Bests / Personal Records, their returning status from last year's state championship, and how successful their track & field campaign was. Throw in a bunch of girls that had really promising track performances at the bottom and here we have over 50 of the top talents in all of girls 4A for the 2013 season. =) Also, if I missed anyone or had any statistics incorrect, please let me know!

Boys Preseason State Rankings by Classifications:

1A Boys Rankings
By: Mark Caulfield, The Geneva School, markscaul@aol.com
Team Rankings:
Commentary: When you look at the pre-season rankings purely from last years results this is a no brainer.  Maclay School and Holy Trinity are clearly the top two teams and separate themselves by only a few points.  These are well coached teams with strong traditions and between them have 11 boys state titles (Holy Trinity 6 and Maclay 5). What you don't see in pre-season rankings though is who put in the work over the summer and who is primed to make the big improvements this season. That is where the fun begins. Who is going to break into the top 10? Top 5? Lots of contenders. It all begins August 31. Good luck to all the teams but especially you 1A teams!

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Maclay School (NR) A strong returning contingent, coaching, and geography makes Maclay the pre-season pick. Excellent coaching, a great place to train in Tallahassee, and a strong top 3 who could all finish in the top 10 at State puts them on top.
2. Holy Trinity Academy (NR) Training, history, and great coaching will ensure the Tigers will be ready when it counts. Strong up front with a state contender followed by 3 talented freshman who can finish in the top 20. Question become who steps up in the 5th spot to put them over the top.
3. Shorecrest Prep (NR) Porter and Peterson are tough at 1 and 2 and will look to lead their team to a great finish at the State Meet. Will need to tighten up 1-5 gap if they hope to make it on the podium.
4. Pensacola Christian Acad. (NR) PCA returns a talented team from last season and looks to improve upon their 11th place finish at the State Meet. Competitive up front at 1-3 but watch them early to see if they can close the gap at 4-5 and make a run at the top 3.
5. Indian Rocks Christian (NR) A good pack running team with a returning 1:25 spread for their top 5. If they can put one in the top 15 and continue to improve, could be a team to surprise.
6. The Geneva School (NR) Strong up front at 1 and 2. A few talented newcomers and some hard working athletes at 3-7, but only time will tell if they can put it all together and can make a run at the Top 5.
7. P.K. Younge School (NR) Early in the season, this could be a team to watch. Returning an elite at 1 while 2-4 were a tight 30 second spread. If they found a #5 over the summer they will be tough!
8. St. Petersburg Catholic (NR) Looking to improve upon their 16th place finish last season. Top 2 look solid and if they build some depth and tighten up the gap, they will be there when it counts.
9. North Florida Christian (NR) Anytime you start with the top returner, your team has a shot. Also strong at the number 2 spot and if added any depth this season, they could make a top 5 jump.
10. Admiral Farragut Academy (NR) Having 2 runners in the top 15 in the pre-season rankings is a great start. If they can pull 3-5 along with them, this team can make some noise this season and move up.
11. Miami Country Day (NR) Of the top 15 returning teams, this team has the closest 1-5 gap at 49 seconds. If they can move that pack up a bit and get a font runner to break out, they will surprise!
12. Seffner Christian Academy (NR) Will be rebuilding after a great 2012 season and 4th place state finish. Lost top 2 to graduation but have some up and coming young talent and excellent coaching to reload.
13. Seacrest Country Day (NR) Have a potential top 10 finisher in Lemay is a great spot for a team looking to break into the top 10 this season. If they got the work in this summer, they'll be on the move!
14. Westminster Academy (NR) Always a strong team from South Florida. They are loaded at 1-2 and strong at 3. If a couple more step up at 4-5 this team will one of the top 10 teams in Class 1A.
15. Circle Christian School (NR) Lost 3 of their top 4 returners but have some young talent and are well coached.  Look for them to come on strong towards the end of the season.
Individual Rankings:
Commentary: With 10 of the first 15 finishers at last years State Cross Country Championships belonging to Seniors, the door is wide open this year for lots of newcomers to the big stage. Typically, there are plenty of surprises to start each season as we get a chance to see who put in the work over the summer. This first ranking takes a look back at last seasons results in both cross country and track and seeks to establish a pre-season watch list.  Results from last year show only 3 Class 1A athletes broke the 16:00 barrier while 24 broke 17:00. There is enough talent this year to blow up those numbers. At the top North Florida Christian's Griffith Rutherford who comes in as the fastest returner and highest finisher from last years State Meet. Right behind though are a number of well prepared athletes, led by Mount Dora Bible's Troy Clark in hot pursuit. Good luck everyone for a great season! Let the fun begin!

3. Andrew Cacciatore, Junior - Holy Trinity (NR) 9th place finisher at last years State Meet with 16:19.43 PR. Experience, talent, and a big summer has prepared him to make a run at the top spot.
4. Nicholas Gonzalez, Junior - The Geneva School (NR) 13th place at last years State Meet. Personal 5K best of 16:22. Fastest returner in 1600m at 4:23.78. Could be the dark horse this season.

2A Boys Rankings
By: Doug Nowlin, Pine Crest School, doug.nowlin@pinecrest.edu
Team Rankings:
Reclassifications: Trinity Prep has moved up a classification from 1A, along with Calvary Christian (Ft. Lauderdale).  Cardinal Gibbons has returned to 2A from 3A.  Lake Nona (6th place at last year's State Championship), Robinson (8th), and Suncoast (15th), have moved to 3A.
Commentary: Let's forget about the computer rankings for a moment.  Yes, they are valuable -- but the computer does not tell the full story.  Therefore, my rankings this season will have the human element.  We all know that a couple of freshmen can have breakthrough achievements and immediately change their team's destiny.  So please send me as much information about 2a runners, and their teams, as possible.  I promise to consider all sources of information, and especially pore through the race results.  If your team feels slighted, I assure you that I'm doing my best to be fair.  I wish all teams a very healthy and successful cross-country season!

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Bishop Kenny, R1 (NR) Defending State 2a Champions.  It is their title to defend!
2. Trinity Prep, R2 (NR) 3rd at last year's State 1a Championship and … they have lost their top runner to graduation.  But this is my opinion:  Strong teams that are well-coached don't need rebuilding years.  I do not anticipate that Trinity Prep will drift far from the top of the rankings the entire season.  Welcome to 2a!
3. Immokalee, R3 (NR) This Immokalee team is solid!  A definite contender for a State title.
4. Tampa Jesuit, R3 (NR) This is the team that I want to rank higher.  I fully expect Tampa Jesuit to remain one of the top all-time 2a teams.
5. Ransom Everglades, R4 (NR) Every year Ransom puts together a competitive squad capable of winning in November.  I'm betting this year will be no different.
6. Berkeley Prep, R3 (NR) Bright kids!  This year features a strong runner in front keeping his team close.
7. Nature Coast Tech, R2 (NR) Always a very tight 1-5 split!
8. Lake Highland Prep, R2 (NR) Another team that always runs well in November.
9. Bolles, R1 (NR) Count on Austin Decker to lead his team to an even stronger finish this year.
10. Pine Crest, R4 (NR) Pine Crest Boys finished 10th at last year's State Championship and hope to continue moving up!
11. Bishop Moore, R2 (NR) Still waiting for some scouting reports on these remaining five teams, as well as others.  If your team is not ranked in the pre-season, use that as motivation for a trip to Tallahassee on November 9th.  Once your team qualifies and races at the State Championship, you will want to return every year!
12. LaBelle, R3 (NR)
13 West Florida Tech, R1 (NR)
14 Pensacola Catholic, R1 (NR)
15 Key West, R4 (NR)
Individual Rankings:
Commentary: Athletes, Coaches and Parents:  I hope to be able to recognize the achievements of as many 2a boys, and their teams, as possible.  Please keep me informed!  Transfers, injuries, course length discrepancies, especially challenging terrain and weather, unreported results, etc.  Lots of variables to consider as I compile these rankings about seven times this season.  I promise to be fair and research the 2a news and results extensively.  The most notable change in 2a is that defending State Champion Alex Pedraza of Golden Gate, has moved up a classification with his team to 3a.  (Have a great season, Alex!)  I wish all 2a boys and their teams the very best this season.  See you at the races!

Athlete Name, Grade – Team (Prev.)  Time, Comments:
1. David Yarborough, Sr., Bishop Kenny (NR) PR:  15:59.  David is the only 2a returner with a sub-16:00 performance.  He was last year's runner-up at the State Championship and had a very impressive track season.
2. Tim O'Loughlin, Sr., Tampa Jesuit (NR) PR:  16:06.  Tim was 3rd at last year's 2a State Championship and leads a traditionally strong Tampa Jesuit team his senior year.
3. Austin Decker, Sr., Bolles (NR) PR:  16:10.  There are a few other runners with slightly faster PRs, but Austin placed 4th at last year's State Championship.  Those runners who race well against strong competition are going to be nudged towards the top when I compile the rankings.
4. Leonel Delacruz, Sr., Immokolee (NR) PR:  16:03.  Leonel placed 5th at last year's 2a State Championship.  Leader of a strong Immokolee team.
5. Jonathan (Jack) Klumpp, Sr., North Broward Prep (NR) PR:  16:10.  Jack placed 15th at last year's State Championship (which is quite good), but he had an exceptional Track season.  Jack's NBP team is in my District so I see him race often.  He's a serious contender for the State title in November.
6. Gabriel Correa, Soph., Ransom Everglades (NR) PR:  16:18.  Gabriel reminds many coaches of Elliot Clemente, the former Belen Jesuit standout who found success as an 8th grader.  Two years later, Gabriel continues to excel.  He was 10th at last year's State Championship.
7. Jesse Millson, Soph., Trinity Prep (NR) PR:  16:19.  The biggest change to the 2a rankings is the strong group of boys from perennially strong Trinity Prep, which has moved up from 1a.  Welcome to 2a, Jesse!
8. Max Borland, Jr., Berkeley Prep (NR) PR:  16:42.  I anticipate that Max will have a very successful cross-country season.  He excelled in track this past spring, placing 3rd in the 3200 at the 2a State Championship.
9. Nic Jacobsen, Soph., Saint Andrews (NR) PR:  16:21.  Nic is similar to Gabriel Correa (above) in that he has enjoyed success at the State level much earlier than most runners.
10. Donovon Mundy, Sr., Andrew Jackson (NR) PR:  17:18.  If you've read this far, you will notice that I don't follow the computer rankings line by line.  There are simply too many variables in cross-country.  Plus, how interesting would the FACA Coaches' rankings be if I did that?  Which brings us to Donovon Mundy.  Sources tell me that Donovon is on the verge of a breakthrough senior season.  He spent the summer training with the strongest HS runners in the state and as most successful athletes know, if you want to be better, practice and compete with the best athletes you can find.
11. Canaan Meester-Kitterman, Sr., Bayshore (NR) PR:  16:06.  Canaan had a summer filled with lots of valuable track racing experience.
12. Dalton Shelton, Sr., Lake Placid (NR) PR:  16:06.  Dalton may have been injured in the 2nd half of last year's cross-country season.  He seems to have slipped off the radar.  But he returned for a successful track season in the spring.
13. Xavier Walton, Sr., Titusville (NR) PR:  16:16.  The longer the race distance, the stronger the race for Xavier.
14. Joel Lacy, Soph., Calvary Christian, Ft. Lauderdale (NR) PR:  16:23.  Joel has transferred from 4a South Plantation to Calvary Christian (which has moved up a classification this season).  Welcome to 2a, Joel !
15. Chas Cook, Soph., Trinity Prep (NR) PR:  16:26.  Welcome to 2a, Chas!
16. Sam Millson, Sr., Trinity Prep (NR) PR:  16:27.  Welcome to 2a, Sam!
17. Alyx Gonzalez, Sr., Gateway Charter (NR) PR:  16:31
18. Michael Remich, Sr., Pensacola Catholic (NR) PR:  16:34
19. Drew Denson, Sr., Astronaut (NR) PR:  16:36
20. Hunter Revord, Jr., Tampa Jesuit (NR) PR:  16:43
21. James Harkless, Sr., Nature Coast Tech (NR) PR:  16:44
22. Jordan Lance, Jr., Arnold (NR) PR:  16:45
23. Urias Velasquez, Jr., Immokalee (NR) PR:  16:47
24. Alec Sharpe, Sr., Bishop Kenny (NR) PR:  16:47
25. James Harrison, Sr., Lemon Bay (NR) PR:  16:50

3A Boys Rankings
By: Ryan Lowe, Lake Nona HS, ryan.lowe@ocps.net
Team Rankings:

  Team Name, Region (Prev.)  Comments:
1. Belen Jesuit, R4 (NR) Less than a 30 second split between 1-5 and these guys know how to win.
2. Fort Walton Beach, R1 (NR) Top 7 are all under 17 but it will take improvement across the board to get to the top spot.

4. Leon, R1 (NR) Strong #1 runner, can the rest of the guys catch up?
5. Niceville, R1 (NR) It will be tough to find a stronger 1-2 punch but how will 3-7 do throughout the season?
6. Land O Lakes, R2 (NR) 1-3 will keep them in a lot of races, did 5-7 put in the miles over the summer?

10. Ryan Rodriguez, 11 - Belen (10) 15:50, his time would be a lot of teams top 1 or 2 but will have to settle for 3
11. Zackery Summerall, 11 - Sarasota (NR) 15:54, will he be able to get on the podium in November?
12. Tyler Stahl, 12 - Land O Lakes (NR) 15:57, can he follow his teammate to the medal stand?

4A Boys Rankings
By: Jorge Fleitas, Dr. Phillips HS, jfleitas28@gmail.com
Team Rankings:

  Team Name (Prev.)  Comments:
1. St. Thomas (NR) St. Thomas  has a 39 sec split #1-5. Rumor has it: "STA worked hard at FSU Camp, looked like the strongest team" I see them coming out on top for the first few weeks of 2013! But, mark my words though: "STA at the state meet will need a front runner to win!!!!!"
2. Mandarin (NR) Will it be a strike of bad luck? Will they fall short in 2013? I got an inside track to Mandarin 2 mile time trial this summer... Rumor: " Mustangs had 8 guys under 10:20".. If true!!! I do not believe anyone in 4A has a shot at Mandarin…
3. Sunset (NR) Sunset- The knights may have the best #1-3 punch in all classifications, but you need 5 to be #1... If they picked up a couple new kids this summer... The knights may be #1..
4. Colonial (NR) Colonial- this ranking may upset some people, but the Grenadiers are not done yet... They have another Arroyo "he did not run last year" ;) If you plug in "little Arroyo" Colonials team  may just be the team to beat…
5. Lyman (NR) Lyman- Can Lyman make a run in 2013? A 19 sec #1-4 spread is not a bad start... Question is: Who is the # 5? Clermont has been this teams baby all summer!!!
6. Plant (NR) Plant- If Coach Boza was around this team...I say: "Plant wins States this year hands down!" They have Winter Parks #1 that transferred, plus three guys in the 16s.... But, coaching changes are a tough transition for teenagers... So, I see them falling short in 2013...
7. Olympia (NR) Olympia- tied for the best #1-5 spread in Florida in class 4A. The Titans can make a run at the state title, but they need to get a bit faster!
8. Park Vista (NR) Park Vista - Who? Yep! After finishing 14th at the State meet last year. I see Park Vista finishing no worse than Top 10 in 2013.
9. Buchholz (NR) Buchholz- I believe have one of the best #1-3 punch after Sunset...  What hurts Buchholz is its # 4- 5 runners.... 18:00 will not cut it in 2013…
10. Coral Reef (NR) Coral Reef- watch out for the Barracuda's in 2013!!! They have a tight group... The addition of the Berryhill brothers may crack them a top 5 finish in 2013....
11. Columbus (NR)
