Playoffs? Playoffs? It's here my friend and ohh how exciting they are. Just take a second to listen to the famous words of former Colts coach Jim Mora.
District week begins the road to state. The big schools have almost completed the district round as the smaller schools finish regional competition. Here is how things went down at Lake Minneola HS, host for 3A District 6 which also includes East River, Edgewater, Harmony, Lake Nona, Liberty & South Lake.
Lake Nona made the drive northward with a strong distance coret hat lead them to the regional title. They also picked up several points in the jumps and throws with all underclassmen. They were led by two sophomores in Adair Lyden (scored 20 pts) and hurdler/jumper Mikayla Sheilds (34 pts). Lake Nona qualified athletes in 16 events and look to make some noise at the regional meet which will also take place in Lake Minneola next Wednesday, April 23.
East River probably expected the Lake Nona dominance, but performed well, took second, and brought home a trophy for their efforts. They were led by sprinter Sherline Valentin, who had the perfect day and went 4-4 by winning the 100, 200, 400, & long jump.
The Liberty Chargers haven’t competed since the OBC championships over 2 weeks ago. They came in ready to get the ship on the best course for Jacksonville. Several stars make up this Charger squad, so it’s becoming diffcult to pick out one bright spot. Devarius Turner continued his impressive junior year and added three district titles with wins in the 100, 200 & anchor of the 4x100. The jumpers did their thing (big time) sending all four boys triple jumpers onto the regional meet go along with a very impressive 4x100.. Liberty qualified athletes in 15 events for the regional meet. They will return as the ‘Milesplit virtual meet’ favorites over Land O’Lakes next week.
Harmony sophomore Jeremy Segarra pulled the hurdle double and will go into regionals with a lot more confidence in his events.
