The hometown hero from Oviedo continued her stellar season on Saturday with a big performance in at the Diamond League meet in Paris. Barringer-Simpson took over from the rabbit and pushed the pace after the 800 meter mark. The pack finally decided to respond and closed up on her entering the bell lap.
Jenny maintained the lead until the backstretch when world leader Sifan Hassan made a big move around her. Not to be deterred, Jenny fought back like a champ. Around the final curve they went at it with the Colorado graduate stretching out her stride and swinging around entering the homestretch. Kicking ferociously Barringer-Simpson, who is known for her closing speed, went for broke on American Record pace.
Ultimately she finished second behind Hassan 3:57.00 to 3:57.22, which is the #2 1500 meter time in history for an American. The time is just 0.10 off of of Mary Decker's 3:57.12 American Record set all the way back in 1983.
Incredible race to watch below and Jenny's interview is also excellent. She offers some guidance on the value of NCAA competition to her successful career and a pledge to stay clean and be an idol that young girls can always be proud to look up to. She certainly is!!!
