It was a record breaking day at the 5th Annual Walter Dix Invitational Relays. The top finishing girls teams for the day were, Northeast winning with 97 points, Dillard in 2nd with 79 points, and Ely in 3rd with 72 points. For a close 4th and 5th were Douglas (63 points) and Boyd Anderson (60 points). For the guys Ely won for the 3rd year in a row with 121 points, Boyd Anderson finished 2nd with 107 points, Coconut Creek 3rd with 59 points, and in a close 4th and 5th were Northeast with 56 points and Westminster Academy with 54 points.
In the field events there were some record breaking performances. Camora Sanders broke a meet record set by herself two years ago (121-1) launching the discus 126-0 and in the shot put her personal record (40-10) was broken as well with a new throw of 41-7 ½ inches. In the girls triple jump Nastolgia Smith (McCarthur) broke the meet record with a jump of 37-6. The previous record was held by UCF Knight, Lia King when she was at Boyd Anderson. Finishing our list of girl's field event record breakers, Gillian Morrison (Douglas) tied the girls high jump meet record of Alyssa Young (South Plantation) with a clearance of 5-6.
For the boys field events, the long jump record of 21-11 was broken by three jumpers from three different high schools. Jordan Cabral (Westminster Academy) jumping 22-0, Anthony Gambal (Ely) with a jump of 22-4 inches, and with the winning jump and new record holder Phillip Lee (Boyd Anderson) jumping 22-7 ½ inches. Lastly for the high jump, two teammates broke a meet record which was set last year by Ryan Moore at 6-4 i. Boyd Anderson's Shevon Phips jumped 6-6 and Phillip Lee jumped the new record of 6-8.
On the track there were five records broken, three by the girls and two by the guys. For the girls, Jeyland Valentin (Northeast) set a new meet record in the 300mh running 44.16, breaking the record of former Hurricane, Tamara (46.05). The Northeast girls took 1st, 5th and 9th winning the event. In the relays Boyd Anderson broke the meet record in the 1600m sprint medley (200,200,400,800) with a time of 4:14.92, beating the previous record of 4:19.68 held by the Lady Cobras. Finishing the girls day on the track, the Northeast girls closed out the meet with another meet record in the 4x400m relay running 3:51.70.
On the boys side in the 300m hurdles, two guys broke a previous meet record of 41.81 held by Steven Nesbitt. Sophomore sensation, Damion Thomas (Northeast) runs 40.78 in the hurdles, but Jamal Dowell of Ely takes the new meet record running 39.36. In the 4x800m relay two teams battled to the finish line, with their times only being separated by 1/100th of a second. Dillard took 2nd place with a time of 8:21.21 and Boyd Anderson shows their depth winning their event 8:21.20 without Javon Patterson.
