Salute To Seniors: Brianna Rischar - St. Thomas Aquinas High School

The 2014-2015 school year has provided some great highlights in both cross country and track across the Sunshine State. In the coming weeks many of our seniors will head out to start their college careers both athletically and academically. We wanted to salute them one more time in this special feature and say thank you for your support over the years.

What was your most memorable race/moment?

My most memorable race was the 2013 Cross Country State Championship race. Not only was that one of my best individual races, but also one of our best team races. That race showed that it is possible to overcome any obstacles that stand in ones way. What made the race even more special was that our boys team won the State Championship as well.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

I consider my teammates my biggest competition because they pushed me in every practice and forced me to run my very best in every workout. Without them I would not be at the level I am today.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was contributing to a multiple state champion team in both track and cross country.

If you could do it over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I wouldn't change anything about the last four years. The team has become my extended family, and we always help and support each other through everything. Every obstacle we faced, we faced together.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

My most difficult obstacles were the injuries that plagued multiple seasons. The injury that taught me the most was a hip flexor/hamstring injury during my junior year track season. I tried to run through the pain, but ended up stopping during the season when the pain increased. I was finally able to finish the season pain free. That experience gave me the knowledge I needed to conquer another injury at the beginning of my senior cross country season. Thanks to the newly acquired knowledge of the different types of cross training and strength exercises, I was able to get back running with my team in time for Pre-State and the post season. These injuries have taught me how important patience and true dedication is to this sport.

What will you miss most?

Broadly, I will miss my team and my coach. Specifically, I will miss all our team dinners, both at restaurants and our coach's house; our fun runs; our road trips; Coach's homemade pasta; and the family aspect of my team. Those are just a few things I am going to miss so dearly.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

Never underestimate yourself. There are always going to be people who will tell you that you can't do it. If you want it bad enough, just go get it for yourself. Also, what you do outside of practice is just as important as, if not more than, what you do in practice.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My coaches have played a major part in the way I think of myself and what I can do on and off the track. They pushed me to the accomplishments I have made, and without them I wouldn't be as dedicated to running as I am.

What are your college plans?

I plan to attend the University of South Florida in the fall with an intended major in Nursing, as well as run for their cross country and track programs.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to say thank you to my cross country and track coaches for increasing my love for the sports and propelling me through four wonderful years. Also, I would like to thank my parents for all the time spent at practices, especially the very early morning ones, and attending almost every meet to support me. Finally, I would like to thank my loving teammates and friends who supported me through every hardship and celebrated with me through every victory and accomplishment.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Don't take your high school years for granted. Cherish every moment because they go by way too fast.
