NBNO Recap: Florida Athletes Come Home With National Titles & All-American Honors

Friday Highlights:

2A 400m state champion Danielle Bess, only an 8th grader, picked the perfect time to run a new personal best. Bess, clocked a new meet record time of 55.13 beating the previous top time of 55.21 set in 2008 by Ann-Marie Clarke of Connecticut.

The future of Miami Northwestern is in good hands with such talent youth. One of those runners is Shamarah Shannon who won the girls freshman 100m dash in 11.95.

Mt. Dora Bible 8th grader Rebecca Clark who was the runner-up in the 3,200m at the state meet, and set a new meet record at the FLYRA Middle School State Championship in the 3k, continued her spectacular year with a win in the girls junior high mile with a time of 5:07.12. Miami Gardens XPress athlete Gabriel Curtis was sixth in the boys mile.

The South Dade Express quartet of Jonae Harris, Shaniya Williams, Kayla White, and Symone Mason posted the fastest time in heat two of the 1000m Sprint Medley Swedish Relay. Their time of 2:08.93 broke the meet record of 2:08.98 set in 2013 by Wakefield (NC). Bad news for the team from South Florida, minutes after their incredible run Union Catholic Track Club out of NJ did them one better running 2:08.88. Miami Northwestern was fifth in 2:10.99

White continued her successful day with a runner-up finish in the emerging elite 100 meters. She ran 11.89 in the prelims and 12.01 in the finals.

The Raines foursome of Avery Warren, Netanyahu, Eddie Ausgood, and Willie Wright went 42.38 in the prelims of the emerging elite 4x100, the fastest time going into the finals. They came away with a silver medal and a time of 42.54, falling short to 5 Star Track Club out of Maryland. Raines placed fifth in the EE 4x200m relay.

Juan Moscoso who comes from a family of race walkers finished third in the boys one mile race walk with a time of 7:10.17. His sister Maite was 4th in the girls one mile race walk in 2010 and now competes for Embry Riddle.

East Lake senior Chigozie Atavwhigo finished 4th in the boys 110m hurdles in 14.59.

After finishing with the fastest time in the prelims Shamaria Lovett placed 8th in the girls emerging elite 100m hurdles.

Jeremiah Backlig of Jacksonville was fifth in the freshman boys 100m dash with a time of 11.15. He was also fourth in the boys freshman 400m dash.

Travon Laidler of Jacksonville was the runner-up in the boys freshman long jump with a mark of 20'09.25".
