3A REGION 1
Leon and Chiles... these are both really good teams. And they lock up pretty tightly for the top four, but 57-62 makes it seem closer than it probably is at this point. Leon has them beat in the depth department and, while at the region meet they might be just a few points different, at a more competitive meet that difference is likely to be double digits.
Leon came on really strong at the end of the year last year, peaking for the state series. On the state level, they don't have a leader way out in front... instead they have a pack. They are lead by Claire Stodghill, with two sophomores, Brooke Eubanks and Summer Shepard, just behind.
Chiles looks almost identical with a great three-pack lead by Jodie McGuff, Kaia Hampton, and Kendall Andrews. Their weakness comes in at their 4-5 gap... they will need to work to close that up. If they do, things will be pretty even in Region 1!
Ft. Walton Beach was beat down by graduation, losing three of their top six. Good news is next year they'll return all but their number one, Erin Gallager. This will likely be a rebuilding year, but they have enough talent that they should have the number three slot in the region wrapped up.
Ridgeview, Fleming Island, Navare, and Nease will be hoping to sneak up on them but they'll have a lot of work to do. There is a pretty large depth gap after these top three teams in the region. Those final four will need to worry about knocking each other out first because three of those teams will be in the state meet reuslts, while one of those solid teams will be sitting home looking at them on flrunners!
Lauren Day is the individual favorite for the regional championship and could be top three at state on a good day. She'll be competing solo at state though.
*Update* - Since publishing we've learned a few new things. It seems that publishing a preview has a way of bringing anonymous tips out of the wood work! I received the same tip from multiple sources in Tallahassee. Summer Shepard of Leon (#1-3 throughout the year) has moved to Virginia, putting a bit of a damper on Leon, although they have enough depth to minimize the damage. Chiles, meanwhile, has had the opposite happen... they've found themselves with two very strong freshman who should mix it up with their top four. The two girls Carly Thomas and Lily Williams. Thomas has run a 5:32 1600 and an a 20:28 in cross country as an 8th grader. Williams has run a 5:20 mile and a 19:25 road race 5K! So wow look out folks, the scales have just tipped in favor of Chiles... and Satellite better be on their toes for the state title because I think they are no longer the favorite!

3A REGION 2
Newsome comes back strong this year, losing only one runner. They will be the paper favorite in Region 2. They are still new on the scene and it's always impressive to me for a teams to rise up so quickly. They will definitely need to be on their guard in this region. They have decent depth, but since they are lacking the strength up front there are a number of teams who could end up picking them off.
Speaking of which, let's talk about Wharton. The numbers show them coming back with the fourth best returning team. Wharton likes to compete in some of these preseason meets: Citrus Summer Showdown and Red Mule. And they always look impressive there. This year they lost the Skinner twins though, who have been the anchor of those impressive results in summer meets for the past couple of years. And you know what? They didn't seem to bat an eye.
In fact, I think that especially their Red Mule times showed that they have filled that gap and then some. They have done two things: found new talent and developed existing talent! Alyssa Franks has transferred in from Tampa Freedom to give them a strong number one (19:27 at state last year). Abby Ritter, listed as their number seven below with a 24:17 PR, was their number three at Red Mule with a time of 20:48. Let's realize of course that Red Mule is blazing fast, but that kind of improvement is remarkable. So with their number one in the low 19s, 2-4 under 21, and three more in the 21s... in my mind, that catapults Wharton into the team to beat position in Region 2! And top five in the state.
Ocala Vanguard will only be scoring four as Tori Lawson should win this one easily if she stays healthy--which unfortunately is not a given for her. She was second at state last year and will probably repeat that this year. They are probably third in the region at this point, but are pretty vulnerable with South Lake and Plant chomping at the bit. They'll need help in the five position to help stay in front of them.
South Lake is a program that is improving every year. They feature a great top two in Kali Carney and Lauren Kelly. Kali, a sophomore, is really fun to watch! You know her... she was the one up front at state early! Yes, she faded back later and yes maybe it wasn't the best race strategy... but she did it in cross and she did it in track. You know what? She's got guts and is going for it! So one of two things is going to happen... 1) she's going to learn to tweak her race strategy and lay off a little or 2) one of these days she's not going to fade. Personally, I admire her courage and look for good things this fall from her. Ariana Rangel is their third and gives the top two good support, she should be into the 19s this year. They'll have to hope for some additional help at 4 and 5 to make them a contender for regional champs and top five at state... as-is they are looking at 3rd or 4th in the region around 10th at state.
Plant's got great history and a great coach in Roy Harrison and that goes a long way. But they don't travel much, which means we don't have much insight into their team (since we all know Pinellas and Hillsborough County are a black hole for results), and in my opinion not traveling is a liability for them to not get to race against new/better competition around the state. They're ranked high (8th) in the preseason FACA poll, above all but Newsome in this region, so maybe I don't know something. To me, they're fighting to hold on to that fifth spot in the region. Land O' Lakes and Lake Region (with fresh new transfer Sydney Devore as their number one) will be going for them!
*Update* - We did not have Shelby Blaes' correct PR in the system. She was listed as a senior in the state meet results, but was actually a sophomore. She had a TWO MINUTE improvement over her district time (which is the PR below) to run a 21:40 at state last year. So that really helps Vanguard out substantially and means they are probably the second best team in the region behind Wharton right now.

3A REGION 3
Well, despite how it may look, I have been assured by the Seminole coach that they will definitely NOT be in contention for any regional crown this year. In fact, they won't even make state most likely. They apparently have had a mass defection on the team on both the boys and girls side, and only one athlete from the top five remains competing in cross country this year. I believe that one is #1 Katie Homme. And although we can't see it (since again Pinellas County is a results black hole and Seminole doesn't travel much either) apparenty there is a big drop off after the top five listed below. So that means Katie Homme will be all alone at state unless either something dramatic happens or I was just being fed a line!
So with the vacuum effect that creates in this region, really any of three teams could could win that regional championship: Ft. Myers, Lakewood Ranch, or Cypress Lake.
Lakewood Ranch has a solid pack behind leader Emily Wrey. The problem is the pack is about a minute and a half behind Emily. That definitely needs to be tightened up by state. But what they have going for them, at least at the regional level, is that they could have all 7 finish under Ft. Myers' 5 and under Cypress Lakes 4. So that helps add those costly points and keeps Lakewood Ranch with a great chance for the regional title.
Ft. Myers though as the best #1 (of these teams in contention) in Katie Russo. They top Lakewood Ranch easily through three, but fall flat a bit through five. They'll need to work hardest there in order to justify their 7th in the state in the FACA Preseason Poll.
Cypress Lake is in a similar position, with Juliette Gourdette and Kaitlyn Martin up front. They'll also be looking toward 4 and 5 to help them out and give them a shot at a regional title.
Individually, this is the strongest region and it could be any of four girls: Kailand Cosgrove, Katie Homme, Katie Russo, and Amber Imm. My gut says the Amber Imm may sneak up because of the way she peaked last year, but it's hard to say and none of them had a track season that screamed "look out this fall!" so it's hard to predict a winner!

3A REGION 4
Satellite is cearly in the drivers seat here and has the finest top three in the 3A. That top three is made up of what is left of the dynasty of sisterhood that has fueled Satellite to be a state powerhouse for the past several years: the Shiver and Stern families. Ashley Shiver is the defending state champion, Julianna was third last year. Lethal duo! The younger Shiver though was the surprise at last season's state meet--knocking about 25 seconds off of her previous best at the state meet--and this year as a sophomore will surely only improve from there. Mollie Hibbard holds it down strong through four.
They only graduated one of their top seven from last year, Alisa Kowaleski, but that leaves substantial shoes to fill in the number five position. They tend to peak right over there and develop talent when they need it at Satellite, so I expect nothing less. But if they hope to defend that team state title, they'll need it because and Chiles and Leon will be smelling blood!
St. Thomas Aquinas is going to have a very solid team as well, but with the graduation of Jessica Butler and the to-be number one runner Lauren Ross transferring to the 4A, Nicole Suarez will be all alone out front. They should easily still hold on to runner-up in their region and probably 4th or 5th at state, but will need lots of work to improve much from there. The gap to Satellite at region and to the top three at state is pretty substantial without that top two.
Rockledge returns all seven from last year and hopes to hold onto that number three slot in the region. Christina Edwards is going to need help out front to do that though, because South Fork is coming.
On paper they are weighted down at the number five position, which makes all of the gap below between themselves and Rockledge. However, they are going to have some additional help up front this year. Veronica Ramirez, who was their number one runner two years ago with a 20:42 PR as a freshman, is now back on the team as a junior. They'll receive an additional boost from rookie Valerie Adamek, who came out for track in the spring and hammered out reported bests of 2:26 for 800 and 5:40 for the 1600. Both of those girls should be in the vacinity of last year's leader Kelly Scott. With these additions, South Fork is highly motivated and formidable going into 2008!
